
Manzella, Hulwick Claim Tulane Student-Athlete Of The Year Awards

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Baseball's Tommy Manzella and Lindsay Hulwick of the women's golf team were named Tulane's Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year for 2004-05 Monday at the fifth annual Varsity Ball, Tulane's all-sports banquet.
Student-athletes from each of Tulane's 16 sports teams were honored at the banquet held at the Park Plaza Hotel as all 12 of the Green Wave head coaches as well as athletic director, Rick Dickson, presented awards.
Acclaimed author and Tulane alum J. Michael Veron spoke to the crowd of over 400, which included nearly all of the 2004-05 Tulane student-athletes. Manzella and Hulwick were just two of the 55 seniors honored at the event. The Student-Athletes of the Year are nominated by the head coaches and selected by vote of the head coaches and athletics staff members.
Manzella leads the top-ranked Green Wave baseball team in several categories this season, including batting average, hits, RBI, doubles, total bases, stolen bases and assists. His name has been etched in Tulane's record book several times, as the Chalmette native ranks second in career assists, third for sacrifice bunts, is tied for fifth in doubles, is eighth for career at-bats and ninth in career hits and total bases.
Women's golf captain Hulwick will be the first Green Wave golfer to play in the NCAAs all four years of her collegiate career when she tees off at the NCAA Regional later this week After earning All-Conference USA honors this season, she became the first player in Tulane history to earn all-league honors all four years of her collegiate career. In her four years at Tulane she has 11 Top 10 finishes to her credit, including the 2003 NOKIA/Sugar Bowl Invitational. She also holds Tulane's single-season stroke average record with a 74.71, set during the 2002-03 campaign
In addition to his Student-Athlete of the Year Award, presented for academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as community service, Manzella was also named the T-Club Male Athlete of the Year. Swimmer Linda McEachrane was seleced as the T-Club Female Athlete of the Year after earning three conference titles and leading the Green Wave to its first Conference USA championship.
Dickson presented the 2004-05 Director's Awards to volleyball's Katie Case and men's track and field senior Eric Hambidge. Selected by Dickson, the awards are given for outstanding effort, attitude and overcoming obstacles during their careers.
The evening also featured the premiere of the 2004-05 All-Sports Highlight Video, produced by the Green Wave Video Department.
