New Orleans - The Tulane men's and women's basketball teams both take to the floor Tuesday in games against the Loyola Wolfpack. The Tulane women (2-1) are facing their NAIA neighbors for the first time (6 p.m.), while the Tulane men (2-1) have won five straight over Loyola and tip off at 8:30 p.m.
Tulane and Loyola's campuses are separated by just roughly forty feet of Freret Street in uptown New Orleans. The Wolfpack basketball offices are actually located closer to Fogelman Arena than the Tulane basketball offices, yet the women's programs have never met. And NCAA legislation allowed the men's teams to face each other in 2000, after 28 years between meetings.
Lisa Stockton's women's squad ends a four-game home stand to start the season. The Green Wave looks to bounce back from a home-court loss to No. 9 LSU on Sunday. Tulane became just the third team since the start of last season - joining No. 7 Connecticut and No. 4 Duke - to hold LSU to under 60 points. But the Green Wave offense struggled in the second half, as LSU turned a 31-31 tie (with 14:37 to go) into a 59-39 win.
On the men's side, Dave Dickerson's squad has won back-to-back games at Fogelman Arena, with wins over New Orleans and Charleston Southern. Senior Chris Moore led four players into double figures with 17 points on Saturday as Tulane topped Charleston Southern, 75-69.
Last season, the Green Wave throttled Loyola, 87-41 using a 58-percent shooting effort to win its fifth in a row over the Wolfpack. Chris Moore scored 15 in last year's match-up.
