New Orleans - The Tulane University women's basketball team opened the 2006-07 pre-season with a 90-63 over the Houston Jaguars Saturday at Fogelman Arena. Every active member of the Green Wave scored, led by senior guard D'Aundra Henry, returning from a medical red-shirt, with 14 points. She also added nine steals.
Senior guard Jami Montagnino chipped in 10 points, as did junior guard Nikki Luckhurst, while junior forward Alendra Brown was the fourth member of the Green Wave in double-figures with 13 points and eight rebounds. Montagnino led Tulane with nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Ashley Langford, a Freshman All-America selection last year, pitched in with 10 assists.
Junior Jennifer Sands chipped in six points and six rebounds off the bench, while sophomores Megan Valicevic and Sasha Staidum each scored eight points. Freshman guard Chassity Brown scored seven points with three rebounds in her Green Wave debut. Junior forward Dominique Philpots added eight rebounds.
"We were ready to play today," said head coach Lisa Stockton, who enters her 13th season at the helm of the Green Wave. "Exhibitions give you the chance to use a lot of different [personnel] combinations, and also take the edge off of nerves."
In her first action since the 2004-05 season, Henry shot five-of-12 from the field and added five assists.
"You can watch her and see the element we were lacking last season," Stockton added. "She gives us defensive ability and helps us move the ball and play a more up-tempo style."
Tulane opened up a quick lead before the Jaguars roared back to tie it 11-11, but from there, the Wave rolled to a 43-32 halftime lead by shooting 47.2% from the field (17-of-36). Tulane focused on defense in the second half, clamping down to hold Houston to a 27.6 field goal percentage for the half, holding a 47-31 scoring edge.
The Jaguars were led by Demoya Williams, who scored 14 points. A trio of Jaguars added 13 points.
The lone member of the Green Wave not to score was freshman Brittany Lindsey, who did not dress and will medically red-shirt this season after suffering a torn labrum in her right shoulder this preseason.
"She was playing really well for us in practice, I thought she was going to give us some significant minutes out of the four position," Stockton said. "She's expected to make a full recovery and have four full healthy years ahead of her."
The Green Wave opens the regular season on Friday, November 10 against Stephen F. Austin at 6:00 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
