New Orleans - In an effort to help the New Orleans community, the Tulane women's cross country team joined a group of students from Tulane's Wesley Foundation and volunteered at the Methodist Home for Children on Nov. 19.
The team spent the day interacting with 16 children, ranging from 6 to 15 years old. TU's student-athletes helped the children make jewelry and Thanksgiving crafts, and also played card games, basketball, football and kickball with the kids.
"The team really enjoyed spending time with these children," junior Aubrey Phillips said. "It was nice to see how much it meant to the kids to just have someone to play with. It really helps to put everything in perspective. I am looking forward to coming back and spending some more time with these kids."
Needless to say, the coaching staff was pleased by the initiative shown by the team in organizing and participating in the event.
"I am glad to see our student-athletes getting out into the community and helping others," assistant coach Chris Neal said. "This is something the girls decided to do we are very proud of them. I think seeing the girls getting out and donating their time shows the type of student-athletes we have here at Tulane."
Located on Washington Avenue in New Orleans, the Methodist Home for Children was founded in 1886. Since then, the Methodist Home has served as a shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children. The Methodist Home is dedicated to helping children ranging from infancy to age 17, regardless of ethnic background or religious beliefs.
