HOUSTON, Texas - Juniors Amanda Williams and Linda McEachrane earned third-team All-Conference USA honors in the 400-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively, and the quartet of Cara Davidoff, Tiffany Brown, Victoria Givens and McEachrane did the same in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the Tulane University swimming and diving team continued to roll in day three of the 2006 C-USA Championship Friday at the University of Houston Alumni Center Natatorium.
For the second consecutive day, every Tulane swimmer posted a lifetime best time in their respective events. In addition, Williams and Leann Laing qualified for the U.S. Open in the 400 IM, Kate Naglick posted a U.S. Open cut in the 100 fly, and both McEachrane and Givens timed an NCAA B Standard while qualifying for the U.S. Open and U.S. Nationals in the 100 breast.
"Well, we thought we were swimming and diving well the last two days, but it just got even better today," Tulane head coach Daniella Irle said. "I am so pleased with this group of young women. We had 100 percent individual lifetime best performances again today, and that is simply unheard of in this sport. It just does not happen.
"The typical college team will be around 50-60 percent lifetime bests, and that is a generous estimate, and a great meet for most might see the 70-75 percent range. I have never heard of a team going 100 percent on any given day. In a word - wow. I am blessed to be a part of this type of accomplishment."
The Green Wave concluded day three of the four-day championship in fifth place with a team 284.5. Tulane holds a 120.5-point lead over sixth-placed Marshall, and trail fourth-placed East Carolina by 77.5 points. SMU leads the team competition with 570 points, 196 better than host Houston (374).
Tulane got the ball rolling early with a third-place showing in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:32.94, and freshman diver Arshia Rassi posted a season-best score of 108.10 in the one-meter springboard.
Williams and Laing took turns setting the school record in the 400 IM as Laing posted a 4:25.86 in the preliminaries before Williams had a 4:25.22 in the finals. Williams finished third in the event, just ahead of Laing's time of 4:26.94. Christina Herubin had a lifetime-best time of 4:33.99 to finish eighth overall, as did Nicole Taheri with a 4:32.98 to finish 11th.
Naglick led the Tulane charge in the 100 fly with a time of 56.64 to finish eighth, while Davidoff had a 58.12 to finish 10th. Naglick also paced the Greeen Wave in the 200 free with a lifetime best 1:53.09 in the preliminaries, and finished 15th overall with a 1:53.43 in the finals.
McEachrane and Givens finished 3-4 in the 100 breast with times of 1:03.52 and 1:03.63, respectively, and Chinault joined the duo in the lifetime-best category with a 1:07.40 in the preliminaries before posting a 1:08.22 in the finals to finish 12th.
Tiffany Brown had a lifetime-best 57.41 in the preliminaries of the 100 back, and finished sixth in the finals with a mark of 57.97.
Tulane closes out play in the C-USA Championship on Saturday when the Green Wave take part in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly 1650 free, platform diving and 400 free relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals slated to start at 6 p.m.
