NEW ORLEANS - Tulane sprinter Gloria Asumnu will represent the Green Wave at the 2006 NCAA Track & Field Championships June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif. as the junior from Houston, Texas qualified in both the 100 and 200 meter events.
Asumnu finished 11th in the 100 meters and 10th in the 200 meters at the NCAA Mideast Regional last week in Knoxville, Tenn., but qualified for the national championship meet based on the school record times she ran at the Ole Miss Invitational on April 8. At that meet, Asumnu established the Tulane records in both the 100 meters, with a time of 11.38 seconds and the 200 meters, by running 23.40.
She will run both events at the NCAA Championships for the first time after qualifying in the 200 meters a year ago.
"We're excited that Gloria will be representing Tulane at the NCAA Championships this year," said Tulane head coach Heather Van Norman. "It is very well deserved. Like our entire team, she has worked very hard. It means a lot for Tulane to be at such a prestigious meet after everything that has gone on with our athletic program, our university and our city this year. It really sets the tone for the entire team going into next season."
Asumnu's national championship meet starts on Wednesday, June 7th with the first round of the 200 meters, while both the first round and the semifinals of the 100 meter event will be held on Thursday. The semifinals of the 200 meters will be run Friday, while Saturday's schedule includes the finals of both races.
The 2006 NCAA Track & Field Championship will be hosted by Sacramento State University. More information is available at www.ncaasports.com and at www.hornetsports.com.
