NEW ORLEANS - William Small, a 12-year coaching veteran who has spent nearly his entire career in the South, has joined the Tulane men's basketball program as an assistant coach, Green Wave head coach Dave Dickerson announced Monday.
"We're excited to have someone with William's experience join our coaching staff," Dickerson said. "He has extensive ties in this region and brings great knowledge of this area, which we are committed to recruiting."
Small comes to Tulane after one season at Troy. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at Western Kentucky, where he helped the 2004-05 Hilltoppers post a 22-9 record and to their first postseason win in 10 seasons. During his three seasons at Southeastern Louisiana (2000-2003), the Lions established school records for Southland Conference wins in back-to-back seasons. In 2001-02, Southeastern Louisiana ranked 22nd in the country in scoring defense.
"Every program he has been associated with has won," Dickerson continued, "and he has proven to be not only a good recruiter, but a good coach, as well as a role model for our student-athletes."
Small graduated from Mississippi's Belhaven College in 1993 after playing two years of varsity basketball there, and began his coaching career in 1994-95 at Delta State before spending two seasons at Cowley College in Kansas. He returned to the South in 1997 as an assistant coach at Alabama-Huntsville, and also worked one year at Tennessee-Martin.
"This is a great opportunity to work at an institution with a tremendous national reputation, and for a person with the highest level of character and professionalism," Small said. "Coach Dickerson and his staff earned the respect of the entire basketball community last year with what they were able to do and how they kept the program moving forward in the face of adversity. My goal is to come in and help and support him and the student-athletes as we continue to build this program."
In Dickerson's first season on the bench in 2005-06, Tulane posted a 12-17 record after spending the 2005 fall semester in College Station, Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Green Wave lost four games by five points or less during the year and went 7-3 in Fogelman Arena beginning December 27 when the team returned to New Orleans.
