Mohl is the third Tulane player drafted in 2006, joining day-one selections Mark Hamilton (supplemental second round, St. Louis Cardinals) and Nathan Southard (17th round, St. Louis Cardinals). Hamilton has the option of returning to the Green Wave for his senior season next year, while Southard and Mohl completed their college eligibility in 2006.
Mohl is also the third Green Wave pitcher taken by the Phillies since 2002, joining that year's fourth-round pick Nick Bourgeois and 2002 34th-round selection Beau Richardson. He is the fourth Tulane player to ever get drafted by Philadelphia since the inception of the modern draft, joining Bourgeois, Richardson and 1994 41st-round draft selection David Stewart.
The 757th overall selection, Mohl becomes Tulane highest drafted senior hurler since Henry Bonilla was taken in the eighth round by the Minnesota Twins in 2000.
Primarily a starter during his Green Wave career, Mohl concluded his Tulane career ranked tied for fourth in school history in games started (44), fifth in winning percentage (.781), sixth in innings pitched (308.0), eighth in appearances (71) and tied for eighth in wins (25).
As a senior in 2006, he became just the second regular starter in school history to go undefeated to tie Jason Navarro's (11-0 in 1996) single-season winning percentage record. Mohl appeared in 18 games in 2006, including 16 starts. One of two regular starters in Conference USA to sport a perfect record (9-0), he led the team in wins while ranking second in ERA (4.03) and innings pitched (105.0), and third in opponent batting average (.275) and strikeouts (67).
Mohl finished the year ranked third in C-USA in wins, fourth in innings pitched, tied for fourth in starts and tied for 12th in strikeouts. He finished second on the club with a 3.19 strikeout-to-walk ratio and has a 5.74 strikeout-per-nine average
Mohl went at least 7.0 innings in seven of his 16 starts and posted five or more strikeouts six times, including a season-best seven against Southern Miss (5/14). He went 9.0 innings in Tulane's 2-1, 10-inning victory over Marshall (5/7) and did not walk more than three batters in any game in 2006, including six zero-walk outings
In his first start of the year on Feb. 12 at Minute Maid Park, Mohl earned Houston College Classic All-Tournament, C-USA Co-Pitcher of the Week and College Baseball Foundation Honor Roll recognition after striking out five in 7.0 innings against defending national champion Texas.
Mohl was one of two players with Tulane ties to get drafted on Wednesday, joining 2006 early signee Preston Claiborne of Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, Texas. A 6-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher/third baseman, Claiborne has the option of playing for the Green Wave as a true freshman beginning in 2007 if he decides not to sign a pro contract.
