NEW ORLEANS - On the heels of their best start in recent history, The Tulane cross country team is beginning to earn national attention as the squad claimed the No. 8 spot in the South Central Regional rankings released on Oct. 8.
The Green Wave have run strong all season, winning three meets and placing fifth in their latest meet, the Auburn Tiger Invitational. Tulane has been led by seniors Aubrey Phillips, Keriann Langley, Jill Shriver and Cecelia Clarke, and by freshmen Rebecca Coady and Laurie Dalrymple. The six leaders for Tulane have all set personal records this season in the 5-kilometer run and the 6K.
"It's good for the girls to see recognition for their hard work so far," Tulane assistant coach Chris Neal said. "We have some big meets coming up. This is kind of the championship point of the season. We just need to work hard for the rest of the season, and we'll see in five weeks if we deserve the ranking."
This Saturday will be the Wave's biggest test, however, as they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Festival. Chile Pepper is the nation's biggest regular-season meet, drawing about 45 teams from all over the country.
The Chile Pepper Festival is the Green Wave's final competition before the Conference USA Championship meet on Saturday Oct. 27, in El Paso, Texas. The Regional Championship will be held on Nov. 10, in Waco, Texas and the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19.
