NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane cross country team is seeking its first ever Conference USA Championship this weekend when it travels to the 2007 Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27, hosted by UTEP at the Santa Teresa Country Club in Santa Teresa, N.M. The women will run at 12:30 p.m. CDT.
The Green Wave is currently ranked No.7 in the South Central Region poll, and coaches say the goal for this weekend is a top three finish. A third place finish would continue to mark huge jumps in the last two full seasons, as the team ran to a sixth place finish in 2006 and only 12th in 2004. Tulane did not run a season in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. The Wave's best C-USA finish is third place, which it accomplished in 1996 and 2000.
Tulane is led by senior captain Aubrey Phillips, a native of Baton Rouge, La., who has run in all five meets of 2007, winning one and placing second in two others. She has been the Wave's top finisher in every meet except one, scoring personal bests in both the 5K (17:24.05) and the 6K (21:49.25).
The Green Wave is also led by outstanding freshmen runners Elmhurst, Ill., native Laurie Dalrymple and Rebecca Coady, who is from Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Dalrymple has finished among the top three runners for her team in every meet this season, including second in the last three. She also has set personal best times in both the 5K (17:36.55) and the 6K (21:50.10). Coady won the Green Wave Invitational and placed second at the Southern Miss Invitational. She has been among the top three Wave runners in every meet this season, posting personal best times of 17:54.95 in the 5K and 21:59.94 in the 6K.
Tulane also boasts seniors Keriann Langley, Savannah Moon and Jill Shriver, as well as juniors Rachel Bryan and Cecelia Clarke. Langley led the Wave at the Chile Pepper Festival two weeks ago with a time of 22:21.4. Moon has not run since the Southern Miss Invitational, but will run this weekend. She posted a season-best 5K time of 21:29.84 at Southern Miss.
Shriver, like Phillips, Coady and Dalrymple, has run in every meet in 2007. She posted personal best times of 19:37.66 in the 5K and 23:27.34 in the 6K. Clarke has run in two meets, the last being at the LSU Tiger Cross Country Festival, a 6K meet in which she ran a time of 23:12.26. Bryan ran in only the Chile Pepper two weeks ago and posted a time of 25:00.5 in the 6K race.
