NEW ORLEANS - Behind the first career double-double from Megan Valicevic, the Tulane women's basketball team downed Winthrop, 63-52, Sunday afternoon at Fogelman Arena. The junior tied her career-best with 14 points and set a new best with 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Nikki Luckhurst added 13 points with four three-pointers and junior guard Ashley Langford also scored a baker's dozen while handing out seven assists against no turnovers. Redshirt freshman forward Brittany Lindsey blocked six shots, the second most ever by a Tulane freshman, and scored seven points to go with three steals. She also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
Tulane (3-1) held Winthrop without a field goal for the first 10:38 of the game, opening to a 12-4 lead. The Green Wave defense out-rebounded Winthrop 23-18 in the first half, holding the Eagles to just five field goals (5-of-23, 21.7%). Tulane led 27-18 at the break.
In the second half, Luckhurst drained three of four attempts from behind the arc, as Tulane led the entire second half. The Eagles pulled to win in five with 9:01 remaining, but one of Luckhurst's three-points restored the margin to eight. Valicevic promptly hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to double-digits with 5:19 to go.
