FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Gloria Asumnu was not satisfied simply becoming the first Tulane athlete to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships since 2001. The Houston, Texas, native won her heat in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, qualifying her for the event's finals, in the first day of the championships held at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center yesterday.
Asumnu's time of 7.22 seconds was the third fastest overall among the 20 entrants. Her time tied the school record she set last month at the Conference USA meet in Houston, Texas. With her performance, Asumnu won the right to compete against seven others tonight in the finals of the event.
"We came here focused on the national championship, and right now she's running like a national champion," head coach Heather Van Norman said.
In addition to the 60-meter dash, Asumnu also ran in the 200-meter dash. However, her time of 23.74 seconds on the banked track was not enough to advance her to the finals in that event. Still, Van Norman was pleased with Asumnu's performance and optimistic about Saturday's finals.
"She's very excited for [Saturday] and we're excited too," Van Norman said. "This is great for our program and great for her."
