AUSTIN, Texas - Neither rain nor wind could hold back the women's track and field team, which posted three regional qualifying times Friday and Saturday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, held at the University of Texas's Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Two Green Wave relay teams both qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Mideast Regional Championship in Columbia, Mo., in May. The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Jasmine Momoh, junior Kyra Lobbins, senior Gloria Asumnu, and junior Shanon Beelendorf posted a time of 3:40.79 in its first competition of the season. The time was good for 13th overall and, of course, to provisionally qualify for the regional meet.
Not to be outdone, the 4x100 meter relay team composed of junior Taneekwa Ross, Asumnu, freshman Olivia Kizzee, and Momoh improved over last week's time and claimed the seventh-best time in the preliminary rounds with a time of 45.39 seconds. In addition, the time was the second-best mark in school history in the event. The team finished third in a waterlogged final today.
Despite the washed-out final, head coach Heather Van Norman was pleased with the weekend's results.
"We did what we went there to do, which was to get those relay teams qualified," Van Norman said.
In addition to the team performances, Asumnu also broke her own school record in the 100-meter dash, posting yet another regional qualifying mark in the event with a time of 11.31 seconds. The time was fourth-best among the more than 90 participants in the event. However, the finals of the event, scheduled for today, were rained out.
The Green Wave track and field team returns to action at the Ole Miss Invitational next weekend in Oxford, Miss., as it prepares for the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Houston, Texas, in one month.
"We need to focus on individual events for the next few weeks," Van Norman said.
