SACRAMENTO, Calif. - At the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday, the 4x100-meter relay team for Tulane Track & Field placed fourth, just 0.03 out of an automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships. On Tuesday, the NCAA announced that the Green Wave's time of 45.25 was among the top 12 in the country, and the squad would be competing in Sacramento at June 6-9's NCAA Championships.
The NCAA qualification standards allotted for the top three in each of the four NCAA regional meets, with the next best four times earning a spot in the NCAA Championship.
The 4x100 team of junior Taneekwa Ross, freshman Jasmine Momoh, sophomore Shaina Pelham and senior Gloria Asumnu helped the Green Wave place eighth at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Asumnu set school records in the 100-meter dash, taking first place, and the 200-meter dash, finishing second, to advance to the NCAA Championships in each event.
"Gloria and I have many goals. One, which she achieved Saturday, was to win!" head coach Heather Van Norman said. "I want a win for her because she deserved it. She has worked through many of life's lessons as well as athletic lessons. I knew it would be a matter of time. She has looked great in practice for the past two weeks as we have 'tuned up' a few things in her race."
Tulane will depart for the NCAA Championships, which take place at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the Sacramento State University's campus.
"Our regional experience was awesome," Van Norman said. "It was a true test of character. We are a good team that will grow next year with incoming talent."
