New Orleans- The Green Wave baseball club improved their record with two definitive victories over the Wright State Raiders Saturday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, posting a 5-3 win in game one and a 10-2 win in game two.
"Matt Petiton really pitched well today," head coach Rick Jones said. "He came in and set the tone early. Today wasn't an easy day to pitch, no matter where the wind is going, when it's blowing that hard, it's swirling and it's not easy to pitch and I thought he did a good job. Nick Pepitone was really good when we needed him to be, getting us out of the inning."
In game one, Tulane (5-3) was looking to bounce back from a tough loss Friday night and sent junior Matt Petiton to the bump. Petiton earned his first win of the year after throwing 6.2 innings and striking out four and only giving up two walks in his second outing of the season, while sophomore Nick Pepitone picked up his first save of the year, coming in and throwing 2.1 innings of relief, giving up no runs and only one hit.
Petiton got run support from his club early, as senior Sam Honeck laid down a bunt with the corners back to get on first and scored on a Steve Moritz double down the left field line. Tulane picked up two more runs in their half of the third inning when Scott Powell lead off with a home run to left field to spur the Green Wave offense. Josh Prince singled to center and later scored when Honeck picked up his second hit of the day, after doubling to right center, giving Tulane a 3-0 early lead.
The Raiders answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth on an error but Tulane made up for the miscue when freshman Evan Mistich scored on a wild pitch after earning his way on the bag with a walk. Mistich, who got his first collegiate start in game one, finished the day 2-4 with two RBI after a pinch-hit ground rule double in Friday night's game.
With a 4-2 lead going into the fifth, Wright State and the Green Wave traded runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, giving game one a 5-3 final.
The Tulane offense unloaded in game two, in which the Green Wave knocked off the Raiders 10-2 while posting eight hits in the seven inning night cap. Senior Josh Zeid earned his second win of the year after throwing a complete game and only giving up four hits.
"This is Josh Zeid's second outing in a row where he's been low- to mid-90s with a good slider and been very competitive," Jones said. "Wright State is a good offensive club, they showed that last night and we weren't as sharp defensively as we normally are and I'm sure the conditions had something to do with that but I think our pitching was much better [than last night]."
The Green Wave jumped out early when Nick Boullosa bunted his way on the sack and found second base on a passed ball. Powell moved Boullosa over to third and Seth Henry (2-4, double, 4 RBI) knocked him in to put the Wave on the board first. Honeck singled to right field, moving Henry to third. Moritz picked up a walk to load the bases, followed by Mistich's single down the left field line to plate Henry and Honeck, extending the Green Wave lead 3-0.
The Raiders got on the board in their half of the second when Casey McGrew led off the inning with a single to centerfield and later scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Kory Twede.
The Green Wave continued their offensive attack in the third, posting four more runs, as Mistich led off the inning with a base on balls, bringing freshman designated hitter Jamie Bruno up. Bruno quickly notched his first collegiate home run, a towering shot to right field and picked up two RBI, giving Tulane a 5-1 lead. Back to back walks to Prince and Boullosa, combined with the double steal put runners at the corners for Powell, who picked up the two RBI on a single through the right side, making the score 7-1 going into the fourth.
The Wave rally continued in the fifth, as Raider pitcher Jordan Wolfe issued back-to-back walks to Bruno and Prince and then loaded the bases after Boullosa took a pitch to the helmet. Tulane quickly cleared the bases when Henry doubled through the left side, plating all three runners and putting Tulane up 10-1.
The Raiders picked up one more run in the top of the seventh, but couldn't erase the deficit as Tulane picked up their second victory of the day.
Tulane and the Raiders will face off in the series finale Sunday at 1PM at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
