The Green Wave is in its first season of competition after the program was suspended, along with seven other sports, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in January, 2006. Tulane has finished among the top-10 teams in seven of its eight tournaments this season, including all four this spring. The Wave is coming off a first place outing at last week's Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate in Oxford, Miss.
For the second straight week, Tulane received Top-25 votes in the Golf World/NGCA Coaches Poll. This week, the Green Wave earned one vote, but received eight votes in last week's poll. Despite playing its first season since 2005, Tulane has managed to climb its way up the national rankings and enters the Conference USA Championship as the top-ranked team in the league, ranking as high as No. 33 in the GolfStat.com top-25 poll.
Tulsa is the defending champion after the Hurricane posted an 18-stroke victory last year with a 54-hole total of 904 at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas. Tulsa's Woori Shin will look to defend her individual crown as well as she captured the individual title a year ago with rounds of 76-71-73 for a four-over par 220.
The Tulsa Country Club is a par-72, 6,140-yards course and last hosted a major collegiate golf tournament in 1999, when TCC and The University of Tulsa teamed up to host the NCAA Women's Golf National Championship.
The Tulane Green Wave returns to the Conference USA Championship this weekend for the first time in three years and will look to pick up where it left off in 2005. In its last C-USA Championship appearance, TU wrapped up back-to-back conference titles with a five stroke victory over TCU, and Tulane All-America player Alison Walshe walked away with the individual medalist honors with a nine-stroke victory over TCU's second place Stacey Bieber.
Tulane also won the 2004 league title with an 18-stoke win over TCU, and the Wave's Liliana Alvarez edged East Carolina's Adrienne Millican for the individual title.
One of Conference USA's founding members, Tulane is making its 11th appearance in the Conference USA Tournament, and has won two titles (2005, 2004) and has three runner-up finishes (2002, 1999, 1998). Green Wave players have captured individual medalist honors four times, including Alison Walshe (2005), Liliana Alvarez (2004) and Pam Buff (1999, 1998).
