
Track & Field Heads To C-USA Championships

TULSA, Okla. - The Tulane track & field teams head to the 14th annual Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Tulsa, Okla., this weekend. The three-day event is slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 14-16, at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on Tulsa's campus. Senior Katarina Busljeta will be Tulane's first student-athlete in action, in the hammer throw at 12:30 p.m.
The heptathlon begins at 2:30 p.m., with freshman Kelly Curtis and junior Arielle Minor as Tulane's entries. Those two will rack up points in the 100m hurdles, 200m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, javelin and 800m, with the final events wrapping up Friday morning.
Redshirt freshman Julia Whitrock will run the 10,000-meter Thursday at 9 p.m. to complete day one action.
Friday's field events begin at 1:45 with Busljeta in the discus, followed by the 3 p.m. long jump, in which Tulane freshman Raquelle Collins will compete. Freshman Max Weber hurls the discus on the men's side at 4:30 p.m., while at 6 p.m., Curtis will attempt the high jump and freshman Garrett Myer is in the men's long jump. The men's pole vault wraps field events at 7 p.m., as the Green Wave post senior Ian Batherson in the event.
The preliminary rounds of track events run Friday, starting with the 1,500-meter run at 5:30, with freshmen Jordon Holtzman and Brian Lozes representing Tulane on the men's side and freshman Johanna Gretschel in the women's race. Freshman Koplan Nwabuoku tackles the men's 400-meter at 6:30, followed by sophomore Aieshia Brooks on the women's side at 6:45.
In the 100-meter dash, freshman Jared Firestone represents Tulane in heat two at 7 p.m. while on the women's side, junior Olivia Kizzee is in heat one and freshman Kasey Rodgers is in heat two.
At 7:30, the men's 800 begins with Holtzman in heat one and Kevin Mitchell in heat two. Sophomore Zandria DeBowles is in heat one of the 400-meter hurdles at 8:15.
The 200-meter dash begins with the men's heats at 8:30, as Nwabuoku runs in heat two and Firestone in heat four. On the women's side, Kizzee is in heat two and Rodgers seeded in heat three.
Friday's action concludes at 9:20, as sophomore Rebecca Coady competes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final. The C-USA Championship concludes with the finals on Saturday.
UTEP and SMU women's outdoor programs enter the championship with USTFCCCA national rankings of No. 22 and No. 23, respectively. However, the Rice women have won the last two indoor and outdoor titles. On the men's side, UTEP claimed two of the last three championship titles. Houston has been the traditional powerhouse in the league winning six women's titles and five on the men's side.
