NEW ORLEANS- The University of New Orleans had the Green Wave's number Wednesday night as the Privateers put up 11 runs on 15 hits on their way to the 11-2 victory at Maestri Field.
"They outplayed us in every phase tonight," head coach Rick Jones said. "Their pitching held us down. We didn't have a good night offensively. We didn't pitch well enough out of the bullpen which is a concern."
Tulane put up two quick runs in the top of the third when Prince led off the frame with a walk. Prince nabbed his 40 stolen base, putting him in scoring position for Scott Powell, who delivered the double to left to plate Prince, getting Tulane on the board first. Powell moved to third on a ground ball to the right side and scored on a Jeremy Schaffer sacrifice fly and Tulane was up 2-0 in the middle of three but UNO responded with a pair of runs of their own in their half of the inning and the Green Wave bats would be silenced throughout the remaining frames, with the exception of sophomore outfielder Nick Boullosa, who picked up two of the club's three hits on the evening.
UNO's Ryan Eden made the Green Wave's lead short-lived, as he laced a triple to open the bottom of the third and was promptly knocked in on a base hit off the bat of Jay Morris. Morris came across the plate when Nick Schwaner doubled him in and the game was knotted at two through four and a half. UNO picked up an additional run to break the tie in the fifth when Ro Jones got into one, taking the pitch over the left field wall, putting the Privateers up 3-2. UNO kept stretching their lead, posting single runs in the sixth and seventh before unloading in the eighth, when they picked up six to break the game open and give it its final, 11-2.
Of concern to Tulane were injuries to two key starters in Seth Henry and Prince. Senior second baseman Henry was hit by a pitch in the shoulder in his first at bat and exited the contest with soreness, while Prince took a shot to the cheek bone on a ground ball that took a bad hop.
The Green Wave will host their final home series of the 2009 season when UAB comes to town for a three-game set beginning on Friday night. First pitch of the Conference USA series is set for 6PM at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
