New Orleans - Less than a month after finishing with a 20th place showing at the 2009 NCAA Championships, the Tulane women's golf team remain on the links at golf courses around the world honing their skills and gaining experience against professional and international competition in an effort to top last year's results.
Janine Fellows, Tulane's low round leader at the NCAA Championships and All-Conference USA Second Team selection, qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur Pub Links on June 1 in Houston, Texas when she shot a score of 75. The 75 was not quite good enough to get through regulation, but Fellows made the most of her opportunity when she was able to birdie the second playoff hole and earn her spot into the Championship. The WAPL will be played June 22-27 at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts.
Linn Gustafsson, the reigning Conference USA and Louisiana Women's Golfer of the Year, returned to her native country of Sweden and played on the professional SAS Masters Tour, where she finished tied for third and was the low amateur at the IT-Arkitekterna Ladies Open with an 8-over par total.
Conference USA and Louisiana Freshman of the Year, Daniela Holmqvist, who also hails from Sweden, returned to her homeland as well this summer and also played on the SAS Masters Tour. Holmqvist played at the Felix Finnish Ladies Open and carded a 7-over par total through two rounds, but just missed the cut.
Samantha Troyanovich, an All C-USA Second Team performer, played in the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge, a professional event on the Duramed Futures Tour, in early June. She fired a 1-over par 73 during her first round and a 5-over par 77 during her second round. Although she missed the cut by one stroke, she was the low amateur among a group of 144 golfers. Troyanovich also participated in the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier on June 15 in Chicago, Ill. She shot 75 and 78 in her 36-hole qualifier and fell short of making the cut.
Maribel Lopez Porras, an incoming freshman this fall, earned Laura Diaz first team All-America honors on the Future Collegians World Tour for 2008-09. A native of Bogota, Colombia, Porras was one of 10 All-Americans on the first team that combined to win 26 and 36 top three finishers on the futures tour.
