NEW ORLEANS - In the first home dual match since 2005, the Tulane men's tennis team swept Centenary, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Tulane (1-0) had not played a home dual match since April 10, 2005. The men's tennis program, along with seven other Tulane athletic teams, suspended operations in the fall of 2005 following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
A small ceremony took place on the courts prior to play with speeches by Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Faculty Athletic Representative Mike Hogg, Director of Athletics Rick Dickson, head men's tennis coach Mark Booras and sophomore Shaye Wali.
"What a great time out here," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "I want to thank the fans that came out. It meant a lot to us to know that they wanted to be a part of the resurgents of the tennis program. On the court you could feel the nervousness of the guys and the excitement. We have known for a while that this was going to happen and it finally happened today. It was really a great atmosphere."
The Green Wave opened the dual match by winning the doubles point and sweeping all three matches over Centenary (0-1). The No. 1 doubles pair of Shaye Wali and Joe Young defeated the Gents duo of Evan Magill and Matt Shoptaugh, 8-1. Tulane's No. 2 double team of Trevor Getz and Coby Kramer-Golinkoff defeated Centenary's Sam Grace and Micah Threadgill, 8-4, while the No. 3 doubles pair of Adam Bernstein and Rodrigo Rappaccoili won, 8-3, over Jacob Dawson and Michael Reeks.
Bernstein collected Tulane's first point of singles play by defeating Reeks, 6-0, 6-0, on court four, while Rappaccioli took care of Dawson, 6-1, 6-0, on court five to put the Green Wave up 3-0 in the match.
Wali secured the victory for Tulane with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court one over Magill. Getz then defeated Threadgill, 6-2, 6-0, on court six, while Young got past Shoptaugh, 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Kramer-Golinkoff had to a little tougher time securing his victory over Grace, winning 6-3 in the first set and then winning a tie-breaker 7-4 to win 7-6 in the second set.
"In any team situation you have guys that have their job and they have to go do it," Booras said. "We had a couple of mismatches that we were able to take care of quickly and a couple that were a lot tighter. The guys that had their so called mismatches and took care of business like they were supposed to and the others guys played really hard and had some close ones. That is a great tribute to Centenary. Coach Killen has done good things with that program."
Tulane will host Troy next Saturday at noon CST at the Goldring Tennis Center.
