NEW ORLEANS - Kris Richard and Jordan Callahan both missed matching their career-high point totals by one in leading the Tulane men's basketball team to a 91-45 victory over Maryville University in Fogelman Arena on Monday night.
Richard posted a game-high 23 points and Callahan added 20 points, while Kendall Timmons chipped in with 18 of his own as the Green Wave (3-1) shot 55.0 percent from the floor as a team and held Maryville (2-1) to just 27.9 percent from the field.
"I was pleased to see how we came out shooting to start the game," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "Tonight was the first time I've seen our guys do that."
It was a tale of two halves for Richard and Callahan. The Callahan, sophomore guard, posted 18 of his 20 in the opening 20 minutes, while Richard, a senior guard, scored 14 of his 23 in the second half. Callahan hit seven of 10 field goals, including four three's to go with a season-high seven assists. Richard connected on eight of 13 shots and five three's. He added a game-high six rebounds in the victory.
"I thought our guys came out with great intensity," Conroy said. "Our pressure against them (Maryville) was intense and we wore them down and when that happened we were able to get what we wanted on offense."
As a team, Tulane outscored Maryville, a Division II school from St. Louis, Mo., 52-19 in the second half after the Saints hung close in the first half and trailed 39-26 at the break.
Just as good as the Green Wave defense was, the offense ran efficiently as well, dishing out 19 assists and hitting 33 of 60 shots from the floor, including 12 of 26 from 3-point range.
After Tulane jumped out to any early 10-5 lead to start the game, Maryville chipped back and used a 7-2 run to tie the score at 12 with 13:08 remaining in the opening half. The Green Wave answered with a 14-2 run of their own to pull away and lead 26-14 with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.
The start of the second half is where Tulane really gained momentum. The Green Wave outscored the Saints 13-2 in the first five-plus minutes of the second half to take a 52-28 lead. After trading baskets for a few minutes, Tulane then extended the lead with a 15-0 run. The Green Wave's largest lead of the game, 48, came after a lay-up by Jonathan Frye with 1:43 remaining.
The defense forced 17 turnovers and collected nine steals which led to 30 points off turnovers. Tulane also won the battle of the boards, 40-24, led by Richard's six and Timmons' five.
Asa Toney led the Saints with 11 points, while Gerald Shaw added nine points and a team-high five rebounds.
Tulane will visit Nicholls State on Friday for a 4 p.m. CST tip in Thibodaux, La.
