NEW ORLEANS - Tulane men's basketball coach Ed Conroy announced on Monday that sophomore guard Ben Cherry will be out the remainder of the season.
Cherry, a transfer from the Citadel, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the victory over New Orleans on Dec. 14.
"I feel terrible for Ben," Conroy said. "He is one of the leaders of the program even though he's only been here a short time. He was by far our best execution guy on the offensive end and was starting to log a lot of minutes which will be hard to replace also his role as our defensive stopper for the other team's best shooter. We will miss those things from Ben so for our program it is a very unfortunate blow and we look forward to getting him back in a year. For him personally I know he will come through it and do a great job of working hard to get better."
The Charlotte, N.C., native had started four games for the Green Wave this season and was averaging 4.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He scored a career-high 10 points in the win over UL-Lafayette.
Cherry will undergo reconstructive surgery in a few weeks to repair his knee.
