NEW ORLEANS - One game removed from tying the school record with zero three-pointers made in a game, the Tulane men's basketball team knocked down a school record 15 long range shots in a 91-70 victory over Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday night in Fogelman Arena.
The Green Wave (7-3), who improved to 5-0 at home this season and won for the sixth straight time in Fogelman, went 0-11 from 3-point land in Saturday's loss at VCU.
"There are several shooting drills we do in practice and on their best day their numbers match up with any of the best shooters and it is because of consistency of our fundamentals and footwork," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "We've worked a lot on footwork the past few days and knocking down those shots can be contagious."
Seven of the 10 Tulane players that saw action in the game hit a 3-pointer and eight of the players cracked the scoring column.
Kendall Timmons and Aaron Holmes led the way with 18 points, while Kris Richard snapped out of his shooting slump with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Jordan Callahan added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
AUM (3-8) was led by Stephen Jordan with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
The Senators jumped out of the gate well against Tulane. AUM held a 15-11 lead with 11:07 remaining in the first half, but the Green Wave scored 10 of the next 12 points and took the lead for good and led 41-31 at the break.
AUM cut the deficit to 50-43 less than three minutes into the second half, but Tulane answered with a 12-2 run to extended the lead to 17. The Green Wave's largest lead of 26, 80-54, came after a Kevin Brown 3-pointer with 6:35 left in the game.
Tulane shot 50.0 percent from the floor and the 15 of 31 from 3-point range was good for 48.4 percent. The Green Wave did struggle from the line, hitting just 14 of 24 shots.
AUM shot 44.4 percent from the field, but hit just three of 19 3-pointers. The Senators did outrebounded Tulane 39-34.
"AUM is a scrappy bunch and their coach has been around for 600 plus wins," Conroy added. "They are quick to the basketball and quick in the paint, but we needed to do a better job of making it a more physical game."
The Green Wave dished out a season-high 23 assists on the 31 made field goals and forced 19 turnovers that led to 19 points.
Kevin Thomas, who made his first collegiate start, scored a career-high six points, while fellow freshman Kevin Brown added a career-best eight points and Trent Rogers poured in a season-high eight.
"I was proud of the young guys that stepped up," Conroy said. "I loved the minutes Kevin Thomas gave us and there were some times tonight when he was able to learn some valuable lessons that will be good down the road for us."
Tulane will make the quick turnaround and travel to Baton Rouge to face Southern on Thursday at 2 p.m. CST in the final contest before breaking for the holiday.
The Green Wave return to Fogelman on Dec. 30 when they face Lamar at 7 p.m. CST.
