Green Wave Uses Late Surge To Defeat ULL

NEW ORLEANS - With the score tied a 50-50 with just over seven minutes to play, the Tulane men's basketball team decided enough was enough and finished the game on a 13-2 run to defeated UL-Lafayette, 63-52, on Saturday afternoon in Fogelman Arena.
ULL's (1-6) J.J. Thomas drained a 3-pointer with 7:09 remaining in the game to knot the score at 50, but Tulane's (5-2) Aaron Holmes broke the tie with a free throw seconds later and the Green Wave defense proceeded to allow only two points the rest of the way, while the offense, led by Jordan Callahan and Kendall Timmons scored 13.
"Hats off to UL-Lafayette," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "They came out in the second half and were really aggressive and had a lot of confidence and threw a heck of a punch at us, but we have some young men in white and green that really responded and kept up. The last part of the game we played with a lot of poise and a lot of toughness."
In fact the Ragin' Cajuns were held scoreless in the final 6:14 after a David Perez jumper.
There were five lead changes in the first half as the game went back and forth for the first nine minutes before Tulane took the lead for good after a lay-up by David Booker gave the Green Wave a 14-13 lead. ULL tied the score minutes later on a 3-pointer by Raymone Andrews, but Tulane finished the opening half scoring 13 of the last 18 points to hold a 29-21 lead at the break.
Tulane led for all but the 17 seconds the game was tied at 50 in the second half.
Timmons led Tulane with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his third double double of the season. Timmons scored 12 of his game-high in the second half. Callahan added 13 points, including 11 in the final 20 minutes, and added seven assists.
Ben Cherry poured in a career-high 10 points and David Booker also chipped in with 10.
Thomas led the Ragin' Cajuns with 16 points, while Travis Bureau and David Perez each posted 10 points.
Tulane shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the game, grabbed 39 rebounds and dished out 15 assists with just nine turnovers. ULL was held to 35.1 percent shooting, including 28.6 percent in the first half. The Ragin' Cajuns grabbed 35 boards and committed 11 turnovers.
The victory for Tulane marked the 12th straight over the in-state foe.
The Green Wave will take 10 days off for final exams before returning to the court on Dec. 14 for a game against New Orleans in Lakefront Arena.
GAME NOTES
- Senior forward David Booker scored in double figures in the third game this season and the ninth game of his career with his 10 points tonight.
- Sophomore guard Ben Cherry scored a season and career-high 10 points in the game. His previous high was seven scored in the season opener at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
- Sophomore forward Kendall Timmons pulled down 13 rebounds in today's game, marking the third game this season with double figures in rebounds and the fourth game of his career.
- Timmons added 16 points for his third double double of the season and the fourth of his career. He has now also scored in double figures in six games this season and 21 games in his career.
- Sophomore guard Jordan Callahan scored in double figures in the fourth game this season and the ninth of game of his career with his 13 points tonight.
- Tulane has now defeated ULL 12 straight times dating back to 1935.
