HOUSTON - Windy conditions and cold temperatures dominated the morning at the Jake Hess Stadium as the 36th ranked Wolfpack of N.C. State upended the Tulane men's tennis team, 4-0, in the final day of the 52nd Annual Rice Invitational.
"Today was a very challenging day with the environmental obstacles at hand," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "25 mph winds and 45 degrees can be tough conditions to compete in. Combine that with a well seasoned program in N.C. State and you have a real challenge."
The Green Wave (3-8) dropped the doubles point to N.C. State (12-4). The duo of Etham Frenkel and Trevor Getz fell to Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson, 8-1, on court three, while Shaye Wali and Joe Young lost to Dominic Hodgson and Rob Lowe, 8-3, on court one.
The Wolfpack clinched the match with three straight sets wins starting on court six with Akasha Gujarati getting past Frenkel, 6-1, 6-2. The 94th ranked Jaime Pulgar defeated Wali, 6-3, 6-0, on court one and Hodgson won 6-2, 7-5 over Young on court two.
"I was very pleased with the fighting attitude our guys displayed throughout the match," Booras said. "We had many opportunities to take the momentum today. That's what I asked these guys to do, to fight hard and play smart in order to create opportunities. Now it's just a matter of following through on those opportunities which will come with experience. I'm very hopeful about our process of growing as a team. As long as we keep taking the positives from these matches we will go down the right path and success will follow."
The Green Wave travels to California next weekend to face San Diego State on Saturday, San Diego on Sunday and UC Irvine on Tuesday.
