SAN DIEGO - Tulane's men's tennis team dropped a hard fought battle at San Diego State, 5-2, to begin a three-match West coast road trip on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Adam Bernstein each won their singles matches for the Green Wave (3-9). Rappaccioli defeated SDSU's (4-10) Luis Rattenhuber in three sets on court three, while Bernstein got past Giovanni Vaglietti in straight sets on court four.
"Adam and Rodrigo did a great job today of beating some solid players," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Rodrigo was able to turn things around from a difficult situation which shows a lot of character. Adam did a good job of getting ahead and closing his guy out in two sets. These are things we have been talking about as a team and it's nice to see them come to fruition in these two guys today."
Bernstein took his first set 7-6 and won the second set 7-5 to give the Green Wave its first point of the afternoon.
Rappaccioli lost the opening set, 6-0, but rebounded to take the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-4 to give Tulane its second point of the match.
Joe Young was able to stay with SDSU's Juan Gomez, the nation's 98th ranked player, but lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, on court two. That was the deciding match of the afternoon, giving the Aztecs their fourth point.
SDSU took the doubles point top open the match and then took that momentum to take the points on courts one and five before clinching the match on court two.
The Green Wave will continue its west coast road trip with a visit to the University of San Diego on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. CDT match against the No 57 Toreros at the USD Tennis Courts.
