SAN DIEGO - The Tulane men's tennis team went toe to toe with No. 57 San Diego on Sunday afternoon only to come up just short, falling to the Toreros 5-2, at the USD Tennis Courts.
Tulane (3-10) earned its two points in singles play with Coby Kramer-Galinkoff and Adam Bernstein each taking their match in straight sets. Kramer-Galinkoff defeated USD's (9-7) Casey Powers, 6-3, 6-3, on court five, while Bernstein edged Nils Schive, 6-4, 7-5, on court four.
"San Diego had some serious firepower in their lineup," Tulane head coach Mark Booras. "They are a tough team. I really thought we had them in the doubles point and we responded well in singles."
San Diego took the doubles point, but it was not easy. The Green Wave hung it there in all three doubles matches, losing each 8-6. The duo of Bernstein and Radrigo Rappaccioli fell to Nikola Bubnic and Charl Wolmarans on court one, while Kramer-Golinkoff and Shaye Wali lost to Casey Powers and Thibaut Visy on court two, and Etham Frenkel and Joe Young dropped the match to Abdullah Hashem and Nils Schive on court three.
"Adam (Bernstein) and Coby (Kramer-Galinkoff) turn in solid performances," Booras added. "Shaye (Wali) had three set points in the second set and Joe (Young) put himself in the place to fight for his second set. If we win those second sets it's a totally different match because all of a sudden we have four points in our sights. This performance really says a lot about how close our team is to turning the corner and putting ourselves in a place to compete against a top 40 team to the end."
Wali fell to Bubnic, the nation's No. 100 singles player, 6-3, 7-6, on court two, while Young fell on Dean Jackson, 6-4, 6-4, on court one in the match that gave USD its fourth point to clinch the match.
Tulane will wrap-up its three match California road trip with a visit to Irvine on Tuesday to face UC-Irvine at 11 a.m. CDT.
