NEW ORLEANS - Rodrigo Rappaccioli won in singles for the fourth time in the last five matches for the Tulane men's tennis team, but the Green Wave was not able to overcome UL-Lafayette on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Rappaccioli defeated ULL's (12-10) Neil Schneider, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9), in come-from-behind fashion to give Tulane (3-15) the only point of the afternoon.
"Today was a beautiful day and we competed well on a lot of courts," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "I'm really proud of Rodrigo who was able to find away to get back in the match. He had a real tough first set and went down quickly and was able to turn it around just as quickly in his favor. That's what we are looking for is that type of response when you get in a tough situation and he showed that today."
ULL took control of the match by winning the doubles point with a sweep and then opening up singles with straight set wins on courts two and one. That put the Ragin Cajuns in the lead, 3-0.
The last four courts all went to three sets, but only Rappaccioli was able to pull out the victory for Tulane.
"We are asking our guys to get up and get themselves in position to win," Booras said. "This experience of being in these matches with these tough teams is really going to start paying off.
Tulane completes the regular season Sunday when they host Marquette (14-4) at 11:30 a.m. CDT at the Goldring Tennis Center.
"We have a good match tomorrow against Marquette," Booras added. " It is going to be about the same level. I'm going to tell these guys that this is another opportunity for us to come out and turn it around and end on a good note."
The Green Wave will then travel to Houston for the Conference USA Championships April 22-25 at Rice.
