NEW ORLEANS - Rodrigo Rappaccioli extended his dual match singles winning streak to three, but that was not enough for the Tulane men's tennis on Friday afternoon as they fell to Southern Miss, 4-1, on the second day of the Conference USA Shootout at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Rappaccioli defeated Julien Roussel, 6-1, 6-0, on court four to give Tulane (3-13, 0-3 C-USA) its only point of the afternoon. The freshman also won his singles match yesterday against East Carolina and at UC-Irvine on Tuesday to improve his dual match record to 9-6.
USM (7-10) started off by taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The Golden Eagles then jumped out to a 2-0 lead after winning the first singles match on court six. The clinching match was on court one where USM's Patricio Alvarado edged Joe Young, 6-4, 6-3.
"It is a real high level out here in Conference USA and if you don't start off on the right note then you dig your ditch a little bit and that is what happened to us in doubles today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "They got a real quick start on us and we had to fight our way back in. Singles was kind of the same thing. The tough matches yesterday made us come out a little slow and we have to do a better job of just realizing how to adapt to that. Our guys need to come out ready to go regardless of the weather or if they played the day before. We will need to do that tomorrow when we play UAB. They are a tough team."
The Green Wave will take on UAB tomorrow at noon in the final day of the C-USA Shootout at the Goldring Tennis Center. East Carolina will face USM at 9 a.m. CST.
