NEW ORLEANS - A misting rain damped the Tulane men's tennis team on Saturday afternoon as the Green Wave lost momentum after winning the doubles point with a two hour delay and a move indoors, falling to UAB, 4-1, on the final day of the Conference USA Shootout.
The match started outside at the Goldring Tennis Center where Tulane (3-15) took the doubles point in dramatic come-from-behind fashion and then the drizzle started to fall. The match was then moved to the indoor courts at the Hilton Downtown where UAB won the first four singles matches for the victory.
The Green Wave secured the doubles point with a win on court one by the duo of Shaye Wali and Coby Kramer-Galinkoff. They trailed 5-3 to UAB's Danny Manlow and Alex Emery before the Tulane pair rallied to take the match 9-7. Adam Bernstein and Rodrigo Rappaccioli defeated Daniel Moser and Tyrone Ewels, 8-1, on court two to open doubles play.
"We did a great job of coming out strong in doubles and setting the right tone to the match," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "I was real happy with how our teams that got down at one and three and each found a way to turn it around and our No. 2 team did a great job of starting off quick and never letting up to finish strong."
Once inside, UAB won three of the four decided singles matches in straight sets and secured the victory with and three set match on court one with Alex Emory getting past Wali, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
"In singles we were just a point away on court four from controlling the first set and had a couple of set points at two," Booras said. "If we convert on those two courts it would have set a different tone for singles and we would have had the opportunity to be front runners.
"I continue to talk with the guys about the big picture and how we need to continue focusing on the process of our season," Booras added. "One of our goals this year is to continue improving with each match and never give up on the year no matter how rough our record is. I have to say that the attitudes of my guys to keep on believing and giving themselves a chance to succeed continue to encourage me as a coach, specifically, in that we have the right group of guys to set the best foundation for our future."
Tulane will return to the courts Saturday when they host Louisiana-Lafayette at 1 p.m. CST at the Goldring Tennis Center.
