NEW ORLEANS - Less than 24 hours after helping the Green Wave finish an undefeated regular-season run against in-state opponents, Tulane University women's basketball standout Tiffany Dale was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Friday.
A rookie forward from Lavon, Texas, Dale earned the title after recording her first career double-double during Tulane's 75-40 win at Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday. The weekly honor is the first of Dale's career, and she becomes the fourth Green Wave player to claim C-USA Freshman of the Week distinction this season.
Danielle Blagg earned the Wave's first rookie title on Nov. 21, Adesuwa Ebomwonyi did so on Nov. 28, and Jamie Kaplan claimed the honor on Dec. 12. Tulane already held the C-USA record for individuals to win Freshman of the Week courtesy of the nod to Kaplan two weeks ago. With four different Freshmen of the Week now, Tulane is the only school in league history to have more than two players earn the honor in a single season.
"Tiffany has been playing very well in practice and made great contributions in our recent games," Tulane head women's basketball coach Lisa Stockton said. "I know she wanted to earn this honor since the other three freshmen put the pressure on her. I continue to be impressed by the contributions of our freshmen."
Dale had 10 points and a career-best 10 rebounds while recording one assist and a block in 17 minutes off the bench during the Green Wave's win over the Ragin' Cajuns. She hit 2-of-4 shots from the field (.500) and 6-of-8 of her attempts from the free-throw line (.750).
Her defensive presence in the post helped limit UL-Lafayette to a 26.4 field goal percentage (14-of-53), including a 5-of-24 performance in the first half (.208). Dale also helped Tulane outscore the Cajuns in the point, 30-14, and seven of her rebounds came off the offensive glass.
For the season, Dale ranks second on the team in field goal percentage (.543), third in free throws made (17), fourth in free throw percentage (.680), and fifth in points per game (6.9), rebounds per game (4.6) and blocks (3).
Dale and the Green Wave will enjoy some time off for the holidays before returning to action on Wednesday, Dec. 28, when they host the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic in Fogelman Arena. Tulane will open tournament play against College of Charleston at 6 p.m. while Hampton and Central Michigan will square off at 8 p.m. The consolation game is slated for Dec. 28 at 6 p.m., while the winner of the opening-day's games will play in the championship game at 8 p.m.
