Gulf Shores, Ala. - The same magic that helped propel the Tulane women's golf team to back-to-back Conference USA titles faded today during the final round of the 2011 C-USA Championship as the 13th-ranked Green Wave combined for a 12-over 300 and posted a third place finish at the Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club.
Tulane entered the final round in second place, trailing UTEP by three strokes. The Wave managed to cut the deficit to two strokes midway through the round, but faltered on the back nine. The Miners, who were the co-leader following the first round, led from wire-to-wire and captured the programs first C-USA title in women's golf.
"Today's round really goes with the whole week and that it was very disappointing," Tulane head coach John Thomas Horton said. "We had a few bright spots with the solid play of Ashley (McKenney), Maribel (Lopez Porras) and Meghan (Chapman). Meghan did a great job today and she is really coming along as we expected her to. She's doing a fantastic job of improving in the right direction. Unfortunately we did not get the job done when we needed to. We have high expectations and we'll figure out where we go from here and get ourselves ready for regional."
Junior Meghan Chapman turned in the best round of her career as a Green Wave player with a 2-under 70, which was the lowest score of the final round in the field, and gave her a third place finish. Chapman rolled through the round with five birdies after suffering three bogeys on the back nine. She completed the event with a 5-over 221 and was one of three TU players to post a top-10 finish.
Sophomore Maribel Lopez Porras began the final round within two strokes of the leader, but six bogeys today were too much to overcome. She finished with a 54-hole total of 8-over 224, which was good enough for a fifth place finish.
Chapman and Pooras were each named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team for their efforts. Tulane and UTEP each placed two players on the all-tourney team.
Junior Ashley McKenney posted her third straight round of 3-over 75 and finished with a 9-over 225 for a seventh place finish. Today, she was cruising along and was even through 13 holes, but like Monday's second round, the 14th hole proved to be the difference. During the second round, she was 1-over heading into the 14th hole, but a double bogey pushed her to three over. Today, a quadruple bogey on 14 shot her score to 4-over, but she did manage a birdie on the 15th hole for the 75.
Junior Samantha Troyanovich turned in her best round of the event with a 5-over 77 and registered a 24-over 240 for a 36th place finish, while senior Janine Fellows posted a 10-over 82 for the second straight day and completed the championships with a 26-over 242 for a 41st place finish.
UTEP's Teresa Nogues claimed the individual medalist honor with her 2-over 218, while Memphis' Marissa Steen edged Chapman for second place with a 4-over 220.
Along with UTEP, Tulsa and Tulane, Memphis and UCF finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the top five teams.
Tulane will take the next few weeks off before returning to action at the NCAA Regionals, May 5-7. The regional sites will be announced on Monday, April 25 by the NCAA.
