NEW ORLEANS - Both the men's and women's squad will return a wealth of depth for the 2011 season, with each squad returning their top runner from a year ago - or at least 1A, in the women's case, with Brian Lozes and Julia Whitrock entering their senior seasons. Lozes was hampered by injury for most of the 2011-12 campaign, not competing during the track season, and Whitrock was an All-Louisiana Cross Country pick, along with Rebecca Coady who graduated in 2012, but also missed the track season due to injury.
Lozes has been a consistent top finisher for the Olive and Blue since he arrived on campus, finishing as the team's top runner in ten meets during his career, and set new career-bests at both the 8K and 10K distances last season. Lozes covered the UGA Equestrian Complex course in a personal-best 25:42.52 last season to claim a 25th place overall finish in the event. Lozes is joined by two of the usual suspects on the course for Tulane, Mike Mainguy and Max Mill, while three newcomers will dawn the Olive and Blue uniform for the first times in their career.
Cody Gibbons, Mark Manion and Geoffery Zelek will all compete for the first times in their respective careers, all as true freshman. Gibbons was a three-year All-Conference honoree while at Nease (Fla.) High School and helped the Panthers to a FHSAA District 5-2A championship in his final season. Manion joins the TU squad after leading the Plant (Fla.) High School cross country team to back-to-back FHSAA Cross Country State Championships in 2009 and 2010. Zelek was a Second Team All-Dade County selection as a senior at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Fla. He helped the Explores win back-to-back FHSAA 4A State Cross Country crowns in his junior and senior seasons.
Whitrock posted a time of 18:15.26 in Bishop, Ga. a year ago and grabbed a sixth place overall finish to help the women's team finish third overall at the event. Along with Whitrock, three other Green Wave competitors this weekend have experience on this course. Emmi Aguillard, Katherine Crabtree and Johanna Gretschel all completed the 5K course last season. Aguillard was the fifth runner to finish for TU, running 19:56.69 to finish 42nd, Crabtree recorded a 29th place showing with a time of 19:11.10 and Gretschel placed 28th overall in 19:10.04.
A pair of newcomers will join the mix on the women's side. Paige Callahan made the trek from Annapolis, Md. to the Uptown campus and had a solid career at St. Mary's High School where she was an all-conference honoree during her senior season. She placed second in the mile and two mile races at the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland's State Championships during her final year at SMHS. Mairèad Kiernan, along with Callahan, will compete in her inaugural race with the Green Wave after earning ten varsity letters at Milton (Mass.) High School. Kiernan was a six-time All-Bay State Conference runner and hold a career-best 5K time of 19:25.10.
