NEW ORLEANS - Ricky Tarrant, a guard for the Tulane men's basketball team, was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week for a record fifth straight week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
The weekly awards are voted on by a media panel representing the 12 member schools.
Tarrant averaged 26.5 points in a pair of C-USA games this week for Tulane. He matched his career high with 33 points in a loss at UAB, including 29 points in the final 13:20 of the game. In that run, he drained five 3-pointers and hit all 10 of his free throw attempts. Tulane trailed by 17 before Tarrant scored eight straight points for the Green Wave that eventually cut the deficit to three before falling, 81-73, to the Blazers.
The Pleasant Gove, Ala., native also led Tulane with 20 points in a loss at home to Memphis earlier in the week. This time, Tarrant posted 15 of his 20 in the first half as Tulane held a 33-32 lead at the break.
The freshman has now scored in double figures in 12 straight games and reached the 20-plus mark seven times, including a pair of 33-point performances.
No other player in C-USA history has won five straight Freshman of the Week honors. This is Tarrant's seventh overall honor this season.
Tarrant and the Green Wave visit SMU at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday before hosting Tulsa in Fogelman Arena at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday.
