NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's men's tennis team fell short in an attempt to snap a two-match losing streak on Friday afternoon, falling to visiting SMU, 4-0, at the Goldring Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (8-7, 2-3 C-USA) lost for the third straight outing, all to conference opponents, and saw a five match home winning streak come to an end.
SMU (8-6, 2-0 C-USA) won for the fourth time in five outings, including a pair of conference victories.
The doubles point was taken by SMU with wins on courts three and two. The duo of Arturs Kazijevs and Tobias Flood edged Tulane's Shaye Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 8-6, on court two to secure the point after Mischa Nowicki and Joe Hattrup got past Cody Kramer-Golinkoff and Adam Bernstein, 8-2, on court three.
"It is interesting how tides can turn pretty quickly," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We were in a good place in doubles for a little bit and who knows what would have happened if we would have stuck it out and got the point in doubles."
SMU took the momentum of doubles into singles and won the first three matches to earn the victory.
Kazijevs outlasted Joe Young, 6-1, 6-1, on court three for the first singles win, while Nowicki got past Iain Sneddon, 6-1, 6-1, on court four before Pablo Perez-Esnaola defeated Wali, 6-2, 6-3, on court two to clinch the win.
"We were flat out outplayed today," Booras added. "We came out passive in doubles and came out flat and had a different attitude today and that is something we are going to have to work on before our match next week against a tough Nicholls State team."
Tulane will continue the homestand when they face Nicholls State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT before travelling to Birmingham for a pair of C-USA matches next weekend against UAB and East Carolina.
