NEW ORLEANS - Idan Mark proved why he is the number one player for the Tulane men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon as the junior hung tough to earn a win on court one and secure a 4-3 victory over visiting USC Upstate at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Mark defeated Matthias Kidler, 7-5, 6-4, for the fourth and deciding point of the match as his teammates watched. With the victory Tulane (6-4, 2-0 C-USA) won for the fourth straight time at home.
"I'm really proud of the guys for how they bounced back from a tough match yesterday and responded today against a really strong USC Upstate," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "They came out firing bullets at us and we were able to get through the doubles point. That was a huge point given the final outcome. They came out and took a couple quick points from us in singles, but Shaye and Takuma were able to take care of their mismatches and Idan really showed why he's our number one player. He came up clutch and got it done."
Shaye Wali earned Tulane's first point in singles with a 6-0, 6-2, victory on court three over USC Upstate's (4-4) Tyler Grove. Takuma Ohashi then got the Green Wave's second singles point and third overall with a 6-2, 6-0 win on court six over Pierre Vernin.
Tulane won the doubles point by taking all three courts. The duo of Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Wali won, 8-4, on court two, followed by an 8-3 victory by Adam Bernstein and Ohashi on court three. Mark and Joe Young earned an 8-7 win on court one.
Upstate took the first singles point on court four with a victory by Yvon Haessig over Bernstein, then tied the overall score a 2-2 with a win on court five. Ohashi's win on six for the Green Wave gave them a 3-2 lead before Ramiro Blanco upended Young, 6-1, 7-6, on court two to tie it up at 3-3 with the dual on court one remaining to decide the outcome.
The Green Wave will return to the courts on March 12 when they host Illinois State for a 1 p.m. dual match at the Goldring Tennis Center.
