New Orleans - The 58th-ranked Tulane women's tennis team put together a big statement win on the road today as the Green Wave put an end to South Alabama's nine-match win streak with a convincing 6-1 victory at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts in Mobile, Ala.
With the win, Tulane improves to 16-5 on the year, including 4-1 in road matches this spring, and has now won its last three outings on the road. South Alabama, meanwhile, fell to 13-5, and suffered its first defeat since Feb. 25.
The Green Wave captured the all-important doubles point for the 16th time in 21 matches this season and sailed through the singles line-up with wins at five of six positions.
"We knew South Alabama was having a good season and was doing well so we knew we had to come to play today and our team did exactly what we asked of them and that's to execute," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "At this point in the season, it's all execution and you really want to peek toward the end of the year and I believe that's what we're doing. South Alabama did a good job of bringing a lot of energy and intensity to us and they had tons of fans so it was a great collegiate environment. I thought the difference was that our girls stepped up and played to win."
Tulane started off on a strong note in doubles with all three doubles teams coming up with victories. The No. 3 combination of senior Lindsay Dvorak and junior Hila Elster took down South Alabama's team of Emily Newton and Mariya Krachok, 8-5, and TU's No. 2 duo of juniors Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton helped claim the point with their, 8-4, win over Mary Angela Martin and Ramona Ghermani. The win was the 25th of the year for the Magnusson and Thorton.
Not to be outdone, the Wave's top tandem of senior Mariam Kurdadze and junior Emma Levy outlasted USA's group of Chane Hines and Alina Volman, 8-5, at the top spot for their 24th win together this spring.
Tulane carried its momentum into singles, where it won its first four matches and closed the door on any chance of a comeback.
Kurdadze claimed her 23rd win of the year with a, 6-2, 6-1, win over Volman at the top spot, while Thornton eased by Hines, 6-2, 6-1, at the third spot.
At the No. 6 position, Dvorak reached the 20-win plateau on the year in singles with a 7-6 (3), 6-4, win over Krachok for TU's fourth point to take the match. Sophomore Jenny Hois won her fourth straight match with a, 6-0, 6-3, win over Martin at the No. 5 spot.
Tulane's final point of the day came from Levy at No. 2, who posted a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win in three sets over Ghermani for her 24th win of the year.
The Wave's lone loss came at the No. 4 spot where Newton upset Magnusson, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, and ended her 11-match win streak.
Tulane will close out the regular season slate this weekend with a pair of road matches, beginning with Conference USA rival UAB on Saturday, April 14 and on Sunday, April 15 vs. UL-Monroe. Both matches will be played in Birmingham, Ala.
