NEW ORLEANS - Tulane women's basketball (3-0) faces a major test Monday evening, when it wages battle amongst undefeated teams. The Green Wave will square off vs. (RV) N.C. State (4-0), inside Devlin Fieldhouse at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on Tulane's All-Access site and can also be heard on WRBH 88.3 FM with Gus Kattengell on the call.
"I feel like we've done some good things. To be able to execute down the stretch vs. LSU was huge for us. Our defense is creating some offense, which is definitely a positive for us. We're getting a lot of good play from several different players. We felt like we could go deep with this team and we certainly have," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated.
Tulane's defense has been a major reason for the squad's early success. The Green Wave are allowing just 49.0 points per game and an opponent shooting percentage of .317, with both categories leading all schools in the American Athletic Conference. In addition, the Wave are forcing 25.0 turnovers per game and have recorded 38 total steals. Lastly, Tulane's +7.0 turnover margin ranks second in the conference.
On the offensive side, the Green Wave have three players ranked in the top-14 in the conference in field goal percentage, including the top-two spots. Tierra Jones continues her perfect start at 13-of-13 shooting from the field, averaging 9.0 points. Tiffany Dale is ranked second after a 10-of-14 start (.714), averaging 7.3 points and a team leading 6.3 rebounds. Lastly, Kolby Morgan is ranked 14th with a .500 shooting percentage.
Speaking of Morgan, the freshman is fresh off of making her first collegiate start at LSU. The New Orleans native leads the squad averaging 13.7 points per game, including a season high 16 points in the opener vs Mississippi Valley State. Like Morgan, senior Danielle Blagg has tallied double-figures in all three games, averaging 11.3 points per game with a .467 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
N.C. State is off to a 4-0 start after victories over Tennessee State, Coppin State, Charlotte and High Point. The Wolfpack have shot .414 from the floor, .309 from three-point range and .807 from the free-throw line. Furthermore, the Wolfpack have netted a +2.8 rebounding and +4.5 turnover margin.
Three N.C. State players are averaging double figures with sophomore guard Miah Spencer leading the way at 16.8 points per game. Fellow sophomore guard Dominique Wilson follows suit at 15.3 points per game while junior forward Carlee Schuhmacher has registered 12.3 points a game. The trio have accounted for 55.5 percent of the team's field goal attempts and 60.6 percent of their free-throw attempts.
"They're going to be very physical," Stockton explained. "When we played up there (last year) it was a very physical game. They're very athletic. They're going to put a lot of pressure on our guards. They don't have tremendous size like they had last year, but do have a lot of speed."
