NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball's team (6-1) hits the road for the final time in the non-conference portion of their schedule, squaring off with undefeated (RV) Arkansas-Little Rock (5-0) on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for Noon CT inside the Jack Stephens Center.
"I challenged our team to go into (Saturday's) game and take some pride in our defense and do what we've done, but also execute offensively" said Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton. "I think we have some really good offensive players on this team, so let's go out and execute and take advantage of that."
After suffering their first loss of the season to Western Kentucky on Nov. 28, the Green Wave posted back-to-back wins over Northern Iowa and Nicholls State by margins of 23 pts and 33 points, respectively.
Freshman Kolby Morgan recorded her seventh straight game in double figures with a team high 15 points vs Nicholls. In addition, Leslie Vorpahl (11 pts), Chinwe Duru (10 pts) and Morgan Rogers (8 pts) all achieved season highs, while Adesuwa Ebomwonyi came one rebound shy of tying her career high with a 14-rebound showing.
Furthermore, the 1,000 career points watch continues for senior guard Danielle Blagg. After scoring nine points vs Nicholls State on Wednesday, Blagg is now at 989 career points. The San Antonio native is second on the team with 9.4 points per game.
Saturday's game will feature a pair of top-15 nationally ranked defensive teams. Tulane's scoring defense checks in No. 13 this week, holding opponents to 51.3 points per game.
Meanwhile UALR's scoring defense is ranked sixth, limiting its opponents to 48.8 points. The Trojans have not allowed an opponent to score over 60 points yet this season, but only average 61.2 points themselves.
The Olive and Blue will look to capitalize on the boards for UALR averages just 35.6 rebounds per game with a +0.6 margin, compared to Tulane's 42.0 average and +6.9 margin.
"We think (rebounding) is a key for us," explained Stockton. "We want to win that rebounding battle by a significant number. (Arkansas-Little Rock) is very athletic and they're going to try to beat us in transition, and we can't let them have second chance shots."
The Green Wave and Trojans have only met once in the series history, with Tulane gaining a 73-55 victory inside Devlin Fieldhouse back on Jan. 30, 1988. A win Saturday would bump Tulane's record to 7-1, which would mark the seventh time under Coach Stockton that the Green Wave earned seven wins through the first eight games.
