NEW ORLEANS - The 62nd-ranked Tulane men's tennis team opened the spring season with a pair of 6-0 dual match victories on Friday at the Pepsi City Park Tennis Center with a morning win over Jackson State and an afternoon decision over Alcorn State.
In the morning match, the Green Wave (2-0) got this off to a good start by taking the doubles point. The duo of Ian Van Cott and Sebastian Rey recorded the first win of the season or Tulane with a 6-0 victory on court three, while Constantin Schmitz and Alex Van Cott won, 6-4, on court two to secure the point.
The match was then clinched by the ninth-ranked singles player in the nation, Dominik Koepfer, on court one. Koepfer earned a, 6-0, 6-0, win over Jackson State's Carlos Martinez for the fourth point of the morning for Tulane. Freshman Constantin Schmitz picked-up his first collegiate dual match victory, 6-0, 6-0, on court four to get the Green Wave's second point.
Sophomore Sebastian Rey got the Green Wave's third point with a, 6-0, 6-0, win on court three. Fellow sophomore Chi-Shan Jao and junior Ian Van Cott each earned singles wins and dropped only one game in the process.
"I was really pleased with how the guys started the season off today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We talked about setting the right tone for our season and we saw lots of fight and tough competing up-and-down the courts."
Tulane enjoyed much of the same results in the afternoon win over Alcorn State.
The doubles teams of Koepfer and Schmitz and Rey and Jao each won to earn the point for the Green Wave.
"We were able to try lots of different combinations in doubles as well and it's nice to see that we can have some versatility in our lineup this year with our personnel," Booras added.
Koepfer once again clinched the match with a win on court one in singles, 6-4, 6-1. Schmitz's, 6-1, 6-0, victory on court five was Tulane's second point of the match and Rey's, 6-0, 6-0, court three win earned the Green Wave's third point.
Jao won his match, 6-0, 6-1, on court four and Ian Van Cott picked-up a 6-1, 6-1 win on court six to round out Tulane's scoring.
Alex Van Cott, the 18th-ranked singles play in the ITA Southern region, did not record a result, but won the first set of each of his matches.
Tulane will complete the three-match season opening homestand when they host BYU on Monday at noon CT at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
