Former Men's Basketball Player John "Hot Rod" Williams Passes Away

NEW ORLEANS – Former Tulane men’s basketball player John “Hot Rod” Williams has passed away, ending a battle with prostate cancer at the age of 53. Williams played for the Green Wave from 1981-85 and played in the NBA for 13 seasons.
A native of Sorrento, Louisiana, Williams finished his career at Tulane with 1,841 points, which ranks him fourth in program history. He is currently 10th all-time with a career scoring average of 16.01 ppg and tallied 18 double-doubles throughout his career. He is second in school history with 36 career 20-point games. Williams was the 21st pick of the second round in the 1985 NBA Draft, selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers. After spending two seasons playing in the United States Basketball League (USBL) Williams played for the Cavaliers (1986-95), Phoenix Suns (1995-98) and the Dallas Mavericks (1999).
