NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball squad (7-3) cruised to a 77-48 victory over Southern University on Friday night, inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse. Kolby Morgan, Courtnie Latham and Harlyn Wyatt provided double-digit point performances, which ignited a Green Wave offense that shot a season best 56.0 percent from the field and 76.2 percent from the free throw line.
Morgan led the Wave in scoring for the eighth time this season with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including three assists, two steals and four rebounds. In addition, it marked Morgan's seventh game this season with at least 18 points.
Latham notched her third double-digit effort on the year with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, with four assists. Latham came out of the gates hot, recording 10 of her points in the opening 10 minutes and 25 seconds. Next, Wyatt rounded out the trio with a season high 12 points on a 5-for-6 night from the floor.
"The first three quarters of the game, we played really well," Tulane women's basketball head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "We certainly shot well for the whole game. It was good to see our pressure working a little bit toward the beginning. Got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, but it's nice to be home, with two games ahead. We just have to build on tonight."
In the first quarter, Tulane utilized a 10-0 run and a 4:20 Southern scoring drought to build a 23-9 lead at the end of the first period. Furthermore, the Wave started on fire from three-point range, draining four of their first six, all in the opening frame.
With Tulane clicking on both ends of the court, the Wave rolled into half with a 44-19 lead, which marked the lowest first half point total for an opponent thus far this season. In the third quarter, the Olive and Blue produced a 14-0 run and kept the Jaguars out of the scoring column for five minutes and 37 seconds, building a game high 41-point lead.
By the time, the final buzzer sounded, the Green Wave defense had forced a season high 23 turnovers and scored a season high 25 points off of said turnovers. It also marked the second game this year, the Wave defense held its opposition to at least two quarters of just single-digit scoring.
With the win, the Wave now boast a season best four-game winning streak and have started the year 5-0 at home for the second straight season.
"I thought we started very strong and were pretty confident shooting the ball," Stockton added. "We just felt very in control. We were able to get some steals off our press and just took great shots."
Up next, the Olive and Blue will host its holiday tradition with the 20th annual Tulane Classic, presented by Embassy Suites, from Dec. 20-21. For ticket information, fans can call (504) 861-WAVE (9283). Also, be sure to follow Tulane women's basketball on Twitter: @GreenWaveWBB.
