TUCSON, ARIZONA - The 53th-ranked Tulane men's tennis team extended their winning streak to five straight matches and opened the road trip on a good note with a, 6-1, over No. 70 Nevada on Sunday at the University of Arizona's LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (8-1) claimed the doubles point with a pair of quick wins and then claimed three of the five singles wins in straight sets to upend the Wolf Pack (0-4) and kick the road trip off on the right foot.
"The guys did a great job responding to being under pressure today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "In doubles they really pushed us and got ahead in a few different spots, but we stood firm with our game plans and ended up pulling out the doubles point.
"Singles was a real battle as well," Booras added. "Constantin and Jao did a good job of taking care of business today to give us a 3-0 lead. Ian and Dominik responded well after their opponents split sets to come up with two more good wins and Alex came back from a break down in each set to claim a victory."
Junior Ian Van Cott clinched the win for Tulane with a, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, win over Robert Margitfalvi on court six. Senior Dominik Koepfer, the fifth-ranked singles player in the nation, and freshman Constantin Schmitz both continued their perfect dual match records with wins over Nevada. Koefper earned a, 7-5, 4-6, 10-3, win over Moez Chargui on court one to improve to 7-0 this spring, while Schmitz defeated Fernando Sunago, 6-1, 6-1, on court three to move to 8-0.
Alex Van Cott and Chi-Shan Jao also earned singles wins for the Green Wave. Alex won, 7-5, 7-6, on court two, while Jao earned a, 6-0, 6-2, victory on court five.
"It's always great to get a road win over a ranked opponent, but now our guys need to get back to business tomorrow on the practice courts to prepare physically and mentally for another tough match Tuesday," Booras said.
The Green Wave will remain in Tucson to face the host Arizona on Tuesday at Noon CT.
