TUCSON, ARIZONA - The 51st-ranked Tulane men's tennis team extended their winning streak to six on Tuesday afternoon with a, 5-2, victory over No. 75 Arizona at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (9-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point and the first two singles matches against the host Wildcats (5-7), who just cracked the ITA national rankings earlier in the day.
Tulane was able to secure the victory with junior Alex Van Cott's, 7-6, 6-2, win over Arizona's Sumeet Shinde, the 74th ranked player in the nation, on court two.
"This was another great road win for our team today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "From the beginning of the doubles point we saw our guys fighting hard regardless of the score. We were down in doubles in a couple of spots and rebounded to get the doubles point. In singles we got down in four first sets but our guys hung in there to turn things around in our favor.
"Alex did great job today by coming from behind in both sets to clinch the match against a very solid player nationally ranked opponent," Booras added.
The doubles teams of Dominik Koepfer and Chi-Shan Jao and Constantin Schmitz and Sebastian Rey each earned wins for the Green Wave. Koepfer and Joa defeated Shinde and Naoki Takeda, 7-5, on court one, while Schmitz and Rey got the day started with a, 6-1, victory over Jason Jaruvang and David Mushayev.
Schmitz and Jao took that momentum into singles play and each recorded straight sets wins on their respective courts. Schmitz won, 6-2, 6-2, on court three over Jaruvang to move to a perfect 9-0 this spring. Jao defeated Robin Chou, 6-2, 6-0, on court five.
The Green Wave continues the road swing at No. 40 LSU on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT.
