Apr 21, 2015 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane golf team closed out the 2015 American Championship with a 10-over 298 total for seventh place, while junior Emily Penttila led the Green Wave with a 1-under 71 today to post a seventh place finish during the final round at the Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.
Penttila logged her second round of par or lower for a 1-over 217 total for 54 holes. Senior Gemma Dryburgh carded a 1-over 73 today and joined Penttila as the Wave's lone representatives among the Top-10 golfers.
Junior Silvia Garces posted her best round of the event with a 4-over 76 and finished 43rd, while sophomore Belen Goicoechea concluded the day with a 6-over 78 and was 37th. Junior Madison Opfer went to the clubhouse with an 8-over 80, but did finish 35th overall.
"It was great to see both Emily and Gemma complete the tournament on a strong note and finish among the Top-10 individuals," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "I am disappointed with the overall team finish, but we are going to work hard every day to get ready for regionals in a couple of weeks."
UCF led wire-to-wire to claim the 2015 American title, finishing eight strokes ahead of runner-up SMU. Houston was third, USF was fourth and Memphis and East Carolina each tied for fifth place.
Individually, UCF's Monifa Sealy and SMU's Jenny Haglund each finished first at 3-under but Sealy claimed individual medalist honors by defeating Haglund in a one-hole playoff.
The Green Wave will now await the announcement of the 2015 NCAA Regional Field, which will take place on Monday, April 27.
