NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University head men's basketball coach Ed Conroy announced today the signing of local three-star standout Charvon "Von" Julien to a National Letter-of-Intent.
Conroy did not have to journey far from the Tulane campus to add another jewel to his 2015 recruiting class. Julien, a 6-1, 165-pound point guard from nearby Riverside Academy, becomes the fifth member of this year's class. He joins recent signees Kain Harris and Kipper Nicholls and early signees Taron Oliver and Blake Paul, another local product from Landry-Walker High School.
"Von is an energetic personality and tremendous leader," Conroy said. "He has good quickness, court vision and shooting ability. His greatest strength is his ability to lead and run his team. He guided his program to three consecutive state championships. He will not only complement the talents of his teammates, he will also help them raise their level of play."
A native of Reserve, La., Julien is a rated a three-star prospect from ESPN.com, 247Sports.com and Rivals.com. ESPN.com ranks him as the 51st-best point guard in the nation and No. 8 overall recruit in Louisiana in the class of 2015, while 247Sports.com rates him as the 46th-best point guard in the country and No. 4 overall prospect in the state. On the local level, Julien is the No. 6 prospect in the NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Terrific 20.
As a prep standout for head coach Timmy Byrd, Julien averaged 13.0 points and 9.2 assists per game for his career and led Riverside Academy to three consecutive state titles and earned first-team all-state honors during his final three seasons.
Julien was tabbed the Class 2A State Player of the Year and to the All-New Orleans Area Boys Small School Team as a sophomore. As an eighth-grader and freshman, he played with Tulane rising senior and All-American Athletic Conference second team performer, Louis Dabney. Julien was also a standout performer on the gridiron as a wide receiver for the Rebels.
"While playing under legendary high school coach Timmy Byrd at Riverside Academy, Von embraced the championship expectations and took ownership in the team's success. We are excited to add another member of the Riverside family to our program, as fellow alum Louis Dabney is a returning. As a point guard, Von has demonstrated an ability to bring a talented group of players together to compete for championships. My expectation is he will bring that same leadership to our Tulane program," Conroy said.
