Baseball Falls, 7-3, in Game One at Memphis
May 14, 2015 | Baseball
MEMPHIS - Tulane baseball dropped the first game of their series at Memphis, 7-3, at FedExPark on Thursday night after the Tigers scored six runs from the fourth to the seventh innings in the opening game of the final regular weekend series of the year.
Tulane (31-21, 11-11) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on RBI-singles from sophomores Hunter Hope and Jake Willsey, but Memphis (35-17, 12-10) battled back by tying the game on an RBI-triple in the bottom of the fourth before notching three runs in fifth on three extra-base hits to put the game away.
The Green Wave notched nine hits in the contest, but spread them out over the course of the entire game. Tulane only posted multiple hits in the same inning in the second and the seventh, which coincidentally were the two frames the Green Wave scored runs.
Memphis took an early lead in the game on an RBI-single by Carter White in the bottom of the first. Tulane did not let that lead last long as sophomore Hunter Williams singled to leadoff the top of the second before senior Tyler Wilson joined him on the basepaths on a single of his own. Hope and Willsey then notched back-to-back singles to score the first two Tulane hitters to give the Green Wave the lead.
Tulane scored again in the seventh when junior Richard Carthon notched a two-out single before coming home on an RBI-double by sophomore Stephen Alemais.
Tulane's Corey Merrill got the start but allowed eight hits across 5.0 innings for five Memphis runs. His counterpart on the night was Memphis' Alex Gunn, who hurled a complete game for the win. Gunn (6-1) struck out five while walking none. Merrill (4-5) was relieved by Patrick Duester, who went 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. The Titusville, Florida, native struck out four.
Willsey tied his career high in hits with a 3-for-4 performance to pace the Green Wave. Williams was the only other Tulane hitter with a multi-hit contest, going 2-for-4.
The two teams will return to FedExPark at 6:30pm CT on Friday for game two of the series. Tulane will send Alex Massey (5-3, 3.47 ERA, 60 Ks) to the bump opposite Memphis' Dylan Toscano (8-2, 3.01 ERA, 66 Ks).
After the dust settles from the weekend, The American Athletic Conference will post their bracket for The American Baseball Championships, to be held in Clearwater, Florida, from May 19-24 at Bright House Field, the spring training site of the Philadelphia Phillies.
