Baseball Suffers 10-6 Loss to Rice on Friday

HOUSTON – The Tulane baseball team (25-30, 10-16 American) lost the second game of the series to Rice (33-22, 15-11 American) by a 10-6 score on Friday night, May 15, at Reckling Park. The loss eliminates Tulane from securing one of the league's eight bids into the 2026 American Baseball Conference Championships in Clearwater, Florida.
Sam Larson (2-3) started for Tulane and allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings with one strikeout in taking the loss. Trey Cehajic threw 1.1 innings with three runs allowed and a strikeout. Blaise Wilcenski went the next 1.1 innings and surrendered a run on four hits. Tom Vincent threw 2.2 with two strikeouts and one hit and run allowed. Aidan Rath faced two batters, and both reached base on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Jacob Moore threw a scoreless eighth inning with a hit allowed plus a strikeout.
Trent Liolios led the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Tye Wood had a hit and a run scored. Matthias Haas totaled a pair of hits and runs scored. Hugh Pinkney knocked in and scored a run on his solo home run. Kaikea Harrison picked up a pair of hits. Tanner Chun had an RBI. James Agabedis totaled a pair of hits including his seventh home run of the season.
Tulane scored first with a run in the opening inning on a Liolios sacrifice fly.
Rice took the lead in the second inning, 4-1, on back-to-back doubles from Paul Smith and Garet Boehm followed by a run scoring wild pitch and a two-out two run single from Zachary Daigre.
The Owls added a tally to lead in the third on a solo home run from Kutter-Gage Webb.
Tulane answered with a run in the fourth. Pinkney started the rally with a solo home run. It was his fourth home run of the season.
Rice extended the lead in the bottom of the frame with two runs, 7-2, on RBI singles from JC Davis and Boehm.
Tulane loaded the bases in the fifth with no one out, but were only able to capitalized with one run, 7-3, on a Chun sacrifice fly.
Rice again made it a five-run lead on the solo home run from Cole Green in the bottom of the fifth, 8-3.
Liolios brought Tulane back to within three with his two-run double in the sixth, 8-5.
Tulane cut the deficit to two, 8-6, in the eighth on an Agabedis solo home run to start the frame. The team put the tying run on first with two outs, but a called strike ended the rally.
Rice scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, 10-6, on sacrifice flies from Boehm and Landis Davila to make that the final margin.
Next, Tulane finishes up the regular season with a 1 p.m. game against Rice on Sunday, May 16.
