TULANE GAME NOTES
NEW ORLEANS - - The Tulane baseball team (25-28, 10-14 American) gets on the road for the final weekend of the regular season with a potential berth in the American Tournament on the line against Rice (31-22, 13-11 American) at Reckling Park from May 14-16. Game times are 6:35 p.m., 6:35 p.m., and 1:05 p.m.

The games against Rice will be broadcasted on ESPN+ on Thursday - Saturday. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on WRBH 88.3 FM/ Varsity Network. Airtime for the radio/stream for the games is 15 minutes before first pitch.
Pitching Matchup
The Green Wave will start senior J.D. Rodriguez in the opening game. This is his 19th appearance and 12th game started although this is his third conference series opening start of the year as he had previously been the Sunday starter since the start of conference play before the last weekends (six total starts). On the year, Rodriguez is 5-2 with a 5.60 ERA in a team leading 54.2 innings worked. He is limiting opponents to a .284 batting average against.
The Owls are expected to start Tanner Wiggins. Wiggins is 3-2 on the year with a 4.42 ERA in 71.1 innings. He has also totaled 48 strikeouts and two saves.
Rice is slated to start righty Ethan Sanders on Friday. Sanders is 5-5 on the year with 3.82 ERA in 75.1 innings thrown in 14 games.
The Owls are expected to throw right-handed pitcher Ryland Urbanczyk on Saturday. Urbanczyk is making his 14thh start and is 4-4 on the year with a 2.75 ERA.
The Tulane Friday and Saturday starters are to be determined depending on the results and relief pitcher usage through the first game of the series.
Scouting Rice
Rice won a conference road set over the weekend against ECU and then lost a 14-3 non-conference midweek to Houston on Tuesday.
JC Davis has led the offense with his .341 batting average, 35 runs, 56 hits, 11 doubles, five home runs and 36 RBIs.
Paul Smith sports a .301 batting average along with 34 runs, 52 hits, 10 doubles, 11 home runs, 44 RBIs, 97 total bases, and 35 walks.
Ethan Atchley has a 5-1 record with 26 strikeouts in 30 innings thrown.
Ty Thames leads the club with his six saves.
Opponents are only batting .255 against the Owls this year
Former Tulane head coach David Pierce took over the program last season in March and is in his second year in charge of the Owls. He led Tulane for the 2015 and the 2016 seasons. His 41 wins leading the Green Wave in 2016 were the most for the program since 2006. He has a record of 44-45 at Rice and an overall mark of 537-316 in his 15 years as a collegiate head coach from his time in the dugout at Sam Houston, Tulane, Texas, and now Rice.
Series History
Rice leads the all-time series with Tulane 31-13 since the two schools first started playing against each other in 1990. Tulane swept the series in New Orleans last season by scores of 7-5, 10-3, and 6-5 (4/4-5/25). The Green Wave won two of three games of the series two seasons ago in Houston (3/22-24/24).
Long Streak Over, New One Underway
Jason Wachs saw his recent 10-game on-base streak come to an end against Southern Miss (4/28). The 10-game streak followed his earlier 60-game on-base streak that ended on Friday, April 10, against ECU after going 0-1 and only reaching base on a catcher's interference in the fourth inning. He did drive in a pair of runs though with a ground out and a sacrifice fly. The 60-game streak dated back to the end of last season. Wachs then promptly started a new streak and reached base in each of the next 10 games (4/11-4/26) before going 0-for-4 with an RBI against Southern Miss. He is currently riding a five-game on-base streak and has successfully been on base safely in 75 of his last 79 games played.

Wachs Honored By the American
Jason Wachs was named the American Conference's Weekly Player of the Week, the league office announced on May 11.
Wachs helped lead the Tulane offense on the week as he hit .500 with seven hits, a pair of doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, 15 total bases, a 1.071 slugging percentage, three walks, and a .634 on-base percentage. He had at least one hit in all four games, including three games with multiple hits. He also reached base safely at least twice in three of the team's four games plus recorded multiple RBIs in three of the four contests.
Wachs started his week with three hits, including a two-run home run in a non-conference road game against LSU (5/5). He then had four hits, four runs scored, a double, a home run, six RBIs, and three walks in the conference series victory over USF. Among his four hits were a pair of game-winners with a two-run single in the eighth inning on Saturday (5/9) against the Bulls and a game-winning three-run home run in the seventh inning to help clinch the series against South Florida on Sunday (5/10).
This is the first time that Wachs has been named the league's Player of the Week in his career, but the fourth time over the last two seasons and third time this season he has garnered a weekly honor from the league office (POW – 5/11/26 & Honor Roll - 5/12/25, 3/23/26 & 4/10/26).
Overall, this is the ninth time that Tulane baseball has been honored weekly by the conference this season. The team has now been recognized by the conference 18 times in the last two seasons.
Notables from USF Series- 5/8-10
Tulane won the conference series over the Bulls by taking the last two games. USF hasn't won a series in New Orleans since the 2001 campaign.
Tye Wood has now reached base safely in his last 20 games after reaching base in all three games of the series.
After 11 straight starts, Trey Cehajic has now worked out of the bullpen in each of his last four games including two games of the USF series.
In the 16-6 loss in the first game (5/8), the 16 runs given up and 18 hits allowed were both season highs surrendered for the pitching staff.
In the 9-8 win in the second game of the series (5/9),the pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts in the game. It was the 17th time that the staff has reached double figures in strikeouts.
The start on the mound for Sam Larson in game two (5/9) was his second of the season after having spent the first 25 games of the year in bullpen. Larson's 5.2 innings and 86 pitches were both Tulane season-bests for him.
Trey Cehajic's save in the middle game (5/9) was the fifth of his career but his first since getting four during the 2024 season. He is the sixth different Tulane pitcher to register a save this season.
The win in the second game (5/9) was only the fourth time that Tulane has earned a victory after allowing the opponent to score first.
The three-RBI game for Jason Wachs in the third game (5/10) was his16th multi-RBI performance of the season.
Tulane improved to 20-12 in games that Hugh Pinkney starts behind the plate in the 9-5 victory in the third game (5/10).
The home run in the series clincher (5/10) was the first of the season for Tanner Chun and his first since last season against ECU (4/27/25).
Tulane ended the home campaign with an 18-9 record.
Tulane improved the team's record to 17-8 when scoring first with a run in the opening inning against the Bulls in game three (5/10).
The third game (5/10) was Tulane's 15th time with 10+ hits this season.
The multi-home run game (5/10) was the 11th of the season for Tulane and improved the team's record to 7-4 in those situations.

Green Wave Chosen For Fourth and Has Two Named Preseason All-Conference
In a vote of the league's coaches, Tulane was picked for fourth and had two players selected as American Preseason All-Conference. The Green Wave were chosen for fourth overall with 57 points. The team also saw outfielder Jason Wachs and designated hitter Matthias Haas chosen as Preseason American All-Conference.
The 2026 Schedule
The Green Wave hosts 27 games at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, along with one neutral-site game in Mississippi and 28 road contests in 2026. Tulane will compete across seven states, including matchups in California, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Kansas, Florida, and North Carolina. Notable opponents include seven teams that participated in the 2025 NCAA Tournament: Southern Miss (2 games), UTSA (3), Creighton (3), East Carolina (3), TCU (3), Mississippi State (1), UCLA (1), and LSU (1).

A Brotherly Connection
Tulane has a pair of brothers on the 2026 roster in sophomore infielder Nate Johnson and graduate student infielder Jake Johnson. The two are Tulane's first set of brothers on a team since 2017 when twins Paul Gozzo, a catcher, and Sal Gozzo, an infielder, were playing for the Green Wave. The 2025 Season Quick Hitters
Tulane went 33-25 last season and had five American All-Conference selections on the year in Michael Lombardi (P – 1st), Connor Rasmussen (2B – 1st), Gavin Schulz (DH – 2nd), Jason Wachs (All-Freshman) and Tanner Chun (All-Freshman). The five selections are tied with the 2024 team for the most for the program since 2016 (seven).
The team also had three chosen for the league's All-Tournament Team in Schulz, Tayler Montiel and Theo Bryant IV plus a pair on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-State Team in Lombardi and Rasmussen.
Additionally, the program had three players selected in the 2025 MLB Draft in Lombardi (Kansas City Royals – 2nd round), Montiel (Arizona Diamondbacks – 12th round), and Rasmussen (Kansas City Royals – 15th round).

Jason Wachs was ninth in the conference in batting average (.335) and on-base percentage (.457). Wachs and Tanner Chun were tied for 10th in the league in triples (2). After leading the American Conference last season with 131 doubles as team, Tulane is again among the leaders this season and are currently the league leader in two-baggers with 115 in the first 53 games.

Conference-Only Standouts
In conference-only play, Jason Wachs is hitting .348 with 25 runs, 31 hits, 11 doubles, a triple, six home runs, 22 RBIs, 62 total bases, a slugging percentage of .697, and an on-base percentage of .464.
Trent Liolios is hitting .310 with 17 runs, 26 hits, nine doubles, 19 RBIs, 14 walks, and a slugging percentage of .488.
Matthias Haas is hitting .325 with 15 runs, 25 hits, five doubles, and 15 RBIs
Tye Wood sports a .277 batting average with 20 runs, 26 hits, seven doubles, 14 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.
J.D. Rodriguez is 2-2 in his 31.1 innings.
Sam Larson has three saves and 21 strikeouts in 17.1 innings worked.
Tom Vincent is 1-0 with a save and eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings worked.
Blaise Wilcenski is 2-1 with 2.86 ERA in eight games out of the bullpen and 22.0 innings along with 19 strikeouts.

Wachs Honored By the American
Jason Wachs was named the American Conference's Weekly Player of the Week, the league office announced on May 11.
Wachs helped lead the Tulane offense on the week as he hit .500 with seven hits, a pair of doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, 15 total bases, a 1.071 slugging percentage, three walks, and a .634 on-base percentage. He had at least one hit in all four games, including three games with multiple hits. He also reached base safely at least twice in three of the team's four games plus recorded multiple RBIs in three of the four contests.
Wachs started his week with three hits, including a two-run home run in a non-conference road game against LSU (5/5). He then had four hits, four runs scored, a double, a home run, six RBIs, and three walks in the conference series victory over USF. Among his four hits were a pair of game-winners with a two-run single in the eighth inning on Saturday (5/9) against the Bulls and a game-winning three-run home run in the seventh inning to help clinch the series against South Florida on Sunday (5/10).
This is the first time that Wachs has been named the league's Player of the Week in his career, but the fourth time over the last two seasons and third time this season he has garnered a weekly honor from the league office (POW – 5/11/26 & Honor Roll - 5/12/25, 3/23/26 & 4/10/26).
Overall, this is the ninth time that Tulane baseball has been honored weekly by the conference this season. The team has now been recognized by the conference 18 times in the last two seasons.
Notables from USF Series- 5/8-10
Tulane won the conference series over the Bulls by taking the last two games. USF hasn't won a series in New Orleans since the 2001 campaign.
Tye Wood has now reached base safely in his last 20 games after reaching base in all three games of the series.
After 11 straight starts, Trey Cehajic has now worked out of the bullpen in each of his last four games including two games of the USF series.
In the 16-6 loss in the first game (5/8), the 16 runs given up and 18 hits allowed were both season highs surrendered for the pitching staff.
In the 9-8 win in the second game of the series (5/9),the pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts in the game. It was the 17th time that the staff has reached double figures in strikeouts.
The start on the mound for Sam Larson in game two (5/9) was his second of the season after having spent the first 25 games of the year in bullpen. Larson's 5.2 innings and 86 pitches were both Tulane season-bests for him.
Trey Cehajic's save in the middle game (5/9) was the fifth of his career but his first since getting four during the 2024 season. He is the sixth different Tulane pitcher to register a save this season.
The win in the second game (5/9) was only the fourth time that Tulane has earned a victory after allowing the opponent to score first.
The three-RBI game for Jason Wachs in the third game (5/10) was his16th multi-RBI performance of the season.
Tulane improved to 20-12 in games that Hugh Pinkney starts behind the plate in the 9-5 victory in the third game (5/10).
The home run in the series clincher (5/10) was the first of the season for Tanner Chun and his first since last season against ECU (4/27/25).
Tulane ended the home campaign with an 18-9 record.
Tulane improved the team's record to 17-8 when scoring first with a run in the opening inning against the Bulls in game three (5/10).
The third game (5/10) was Tulane's 15th time with 10+ hits this season.
The multi-home run game (5/10) was the 11th of the season for Tulane and improved the team's record to 7-4 in those situations.
The three home runs in the series finale against USF was the third time the program had hit three in a game (vs. LMU - 2/15, vs. UTSA - 4/26 and vs. USF - 5/10
Green Wave Chosen For Fourth and Has Two Named Preseason All-Conference
In a vote of the league's coaches, Tulane was picked for fourth and had two players selected as American Preseason All-Conference. The Green Wave were chosen for fourth overall with 57 points. The team also saw outfielder Jason Wachs and designated hitter Matthias Haas chosen as Preseason American All-Conference.
The 2026 Schedule
The Green Wave hosts 27 games at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, along with one neutral-site game in Mississippi and 28 road contests in 2026. Tulane will compete across seven states, including matchups in California, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Kansas, Florida, and North Carolina. Notable opponents include seven teams that participated in the 2025 NCAA Tournament: Southern Miss (2 games), UTSA (3), Creighton (3), East Carolina (3), TCU (3), Mississippi State (1), UCLA (1), and LSU (1).
The 2026 Schedule - Part Two
Tulane is playing games against five teams this season that are ranked in the USA Today's Preseason Coaches' Poll in No. 1 LSU, No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 Mississippi State, No. 10 TCU, and No. 20 Southern Miss.
Uncommon Road Start
Tulane's start on the road this season is the first for the program since 2023 and only the 11th time since 1979 the program has not started the season with games in New Orleans (1979, 1980, 1982, 1993, 2002, 2006, 2013, 2015, 2023, and 2026)
A Brotherly Connection
Tulane has a pair of brothers on the 2026 roster in sophomore infielder Nate Johnson and graduate student infielder Jake Johnson. The two are Tulane's first set of brothers on a team since 2017 when twins Paul Gozzo, a catcher, and Sal Gozzo, an infielder, were playing for the Green Wave. The 2016 team also had brothers on the squad in Ross Massey, a left-handed pitcher, and Alex Massey, a right-handed pitcher.

Inside the Numbers of the Returners
The team's 14 returning players accounted for 52.7 percent of the runs (204/387), 53 percent of the hits (287/541), 55 percent of the doubles (72/131), 58 percent of the triples (7/12), 45 percent of the home runs (23/51), 49 percent of the RBIs (178/360), 52 percent of the total bases (442/849) and 55 percent of the walks (159/287). On the mound, the club returns 48.4 percent of the wins (16/33), 53 percent of the game started (31/58), 43 percent of the innings (212/532) and 34 percent of the strikeouts (308/547).

Tulane added 23 new players to the roster this year. The list includes seven graduate students (Tye Wood, Brett Rowell, Trent Liolios, Jack Johnson, Jake Toporek, Tom Vincent and Aidan Rath), a senior (Nolan Nawrocki), seven juniors (Jude Abbadessa, Sam Larson, Caden Tarango, Jack Brafa, Beau Sampson, Owen Geiss, and Max Maxinter), four sophomores (AJ Groeneveld, Jack Frankel, Johnny Elliott, and LuisPablo Navarro) and four true freshmen (Bryson Ayala, Cole Berge, Evan Burg and Matthew Major).
The 2025 Season Quick Hitters
Tulane went 33-25 last season and had five American All-Conference selections on the year in Michael Lombardi (P – 1st), Connor Rasmussen (2B – 1st), Gavin Schulz (DH – 2nd), Jason Wachs (All-Freshman) and Tanner Chun (All-Freshman). The five selections are tied with the 2024 team for the most for the program since 2016 (seven).
The team also had three chosen for the league's All-Tournament Team in Schulz, Tayler Montiel and Theo Bryant IV plus a pair on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-State Team in Lombardi and Rasmussen.
Additionally, the program had three players selected in the 2025 MLB Draft in Lombardi (Kansas City Royals – 2nd round), Montiel (Arizona Diamondbacks – 12th round), and Rasmussen (Kansas City Royals – 15th round).
2025 Fun Stat Facts
Jason Wachs was ninth in the conference in batting average (.335) and on-base percentage (.457). Wachs and Tanner Chun were tied for 10th in the league in triples (2). Matthias Haas ranked second in the conference in doubles (21) and 26th in batting average (.303). Kaikea Harrison was tied for the conference lead in sacrifice bunts (8) and 38th in batting average (.283). Trey Cehajic and Blaise Wilcenski were tied for 10th in the league in wins (5).
