
Baseball Loses Road Series Opener to Rice, 12-0

HOUSTON – The Tulane baseball team (25-29, 10-15 American) lost by 12-0 margin on the road to Rice (32-22, 14-11 American) in the important series opener on Thursday evening, May 14, at Reckling Park.
J.D. Rodriguez (5-3) allowed six runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings worked in taking his third straight loss. Jake Toporek surrendered six runs on six hits in his 1.2 innings worked out of the bullpen. Jude Abbadessa was the bright spot out of bullpen in throwing a scoreless sixth with two hits allowed.
The Tulane offense was limited to three hits in the game with Jason Wachs getting a first inning single and Nate Johnson picking up base hits in the second and seventh inning. The team also drew walks by Kaikea Harrison and Matthias Haas.
Rice scored first with three in the opening inning on a bunt single from JC Davis that was thrown away, allowing Zachary Daigre to score from second on the play. He was followed by an RBI base hit through the right side by Paul Smith and finished on the sacrifice fly from Kutter-Gage Webb.
The Owls added a run to the advantage, 4-0, in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Webb.
Rice scored four runs in the fourth, 8-0, on a Smith RBI double followed by a two-run triple from Garet Boehm and the third sacrifice fly of the game from Webb.
The Owls added four more runs to the lead in the fifth, 12-0, on a Colin Robeson RBI single, a Davis ground out and a two-run home run from Smith to make the final margin 12 runs.
Next, Tulane plays the second game of the series against the Owls on Friday, May 15, starting at 6:35 p.m.
